PS: for me at least, that picture has a feeling of motion even though you did stop the action of the drivers. Did you pan this a bit?

I'm glad you like this shot of 4014 - we drove up from Albuquerque NM to try and get Big Boy in motion.

I'm sure there was a bit of panning going on, he was running at speed and my goal was to keep the focus point in the middle to rear part of the locomotive. To do that ones does need to more the camera along with the motion of the train. The camera was handheld however.

There was not so much a deliberate effort to pan the shot as I might have done with a much closer fast moving subject, say an RC Model plane in flight - another one of the many subjects I tend to capture with the camera.

I rather liked this particular shot as it gave you a good look at the locomotive and it's support cars as well as a look at the rest (freight cars) of the train.

I got the BB leaving Pine Bluff, again without people in the shot...I went a little East of the city and found myself in a drainage field (dry, thankfully) for the location.

The first photo has a great sky background and side view of the entire locomotive. The second has the engineer (Ed) looking at where he had been rather than where he was going, with a bit of smoke from the smokestack to boot. To bad I couldn't include sound with the still captures.

It might be my imagination but it seems that the engine and its train are in focus (up to a point on the right) while the grasses and the back ground shows a bit of motion blur. As I said that might just be my imagination but there seems to be a possibility to push that a bit to capture a moving object in sharp focus while the background gives us the impression of speed. I think I'll ask my wife to drive from down the street towards me and practice. She already thinks I'm nuts so no harm done.
The 2nd set of shots from corn husker country!

Great shots. Regardless of shutter speed having smoke flowing back in the wind is a sure indicator of speed.

Rich, I think you're right! I had not really looked at the background, or the foreground for that matter, I was too focused (no pun intended) on the train. Which is fair given it was the subject of this shot.

I looked closely at the RAW image and the rail ties/spikes next to the locomotive do appear to have a small amount of motion blur to them. Clearly I was panning.

Some of the closer (to the camera) vegetation and RR ties clearly have motion blur - these are features that were cropped/cloned out of the posted image.

Please let the wife know that in no way am I passing judgement on her evaluation of one mental state on this matter....

I wanted to get BB at speed without people everywhere...I found a place to do that...the only mistake I made was too high a shutter speed...what I used froze the wheels in place. For whatever reason Ed would not stop backup and run past me again, so I'm just going to have to live with this mistake.

Or...I could cheat and fake it...(first photo)

The location is just West of Pine Bluffs just before he started slowing down for the stop there.

You have some great captures of this magnificent locomotive! Thanks for posting.

Interesting contrast in your two images. Fine composition as well.
