You can also rent the camera and use it for a week to help you decide

Doesn't matter - either choice is fine. Rather than deciding on camera features (agree strongly with all that say "feel" is important), concentrate on the lenses available for the system. Either will use your Pentax K lenses (via adapter and no automatic features), but you're considering a new SYSTEM. The lenses are far more important than the camera body.

I have the Nikon D850 and from what I can see now, it's probably the last DSLR I will buy. Of course, I may have thought that when I bought my D800e. So far, mirrorless doesn't quite make the grade but I do enjoy handling the same a size and light weight of my Sony mirrorless.

Depends on what you use it for. A camera is a tool. Each camera is designed with a market (a user and a use) in mind. Both are fine cameras. The choice would depend on the end goal. What is yours?

Unfortunately, my opinion may be a little biased. I have nothing against the Nikon - it is an amazing camera. However, I've been a Canon owner for 45+ years, and I have the 5D Mark IV. It has great Dynamic Range, and very low noise - even at high ISO.
I wish you luck with your choice! Probably can't go wrong in either selection. Best wishes! Let us know which one you grab, and post photos!

If they beat me up and stold my Pentax, K-1and all, I would go all FUJI. Pentax cameras and lenses have pleased me and served me very well for many years now...Fuji is the only OTHER line I could get excited about. Just my take, obviously... RJM

Given your two choices. The only way to go is with Nikon. I use Nikon and I know from experience that Nikon is the best brand. I know you are getting a lot of long complicated replies. Just keep it simple and go with the best, which is Nikon.

Nikon may be the better system for YOU, but you cannot say it is the best.

Obviously, your own words say that you've been happy with Pentax, so why switch? As MT said, the K-1 is an excellent camera and will serve you well for a long time. Don't be lulled into being a traitor to your camera brand just because Canon and Nikon get all the attention. It really would be foolish to consider switching.

i agree with the K-1. The adjustment to a new camera will be easier, no new lenses to buy. I have a K-50 and If i could afford it, would upgrade to the K-1.

What need makes you want to get a new camera?

I was a diehard Pentaxian for 35 years and was convinced that I would never leave the brand. However, I was tired to use the brand that nobody could recognize and annoyed by the scarsity of modern lenses. I did the unthinkable - switched to Nikon as I considered it the only suitable choice. I would never touch Canon, that's my personal antipathy to this brand. I spent a lot of time reading and analyzing the choices and decided to go for D750 as it was within my budget. I found a great deal on Craigslist - used D750 with Nikon AF-S 70-200 F2.8 VR V2 and a grip for the fraction of its original price. I then sold my beloved K-1 and all my Pentax lenses and bought few more FF Nikon lenses - 50mm F1.8, 16-35 f4, AF-P 70-300mm and Tamron 24-70mm f2.8 G2. As I always preferred to have 2 bodies, I decided to look into the future and, instead of another DSLR, I bought Nikon Z6 mirrorless. I now have a great, comprehensive kit and I am happy. I like the feeling that, if LBA strikes me and I decide to buy some other lens, I can find and buy it the next day and not wait for Pentax to take a pity on its users and release it (big maybe). That's my story, hope it helps.

Simple, list those features most important to you. Choose the camera which best performs those features.
