I’ve been a diehard Pentax shooter for a long time. Now it’s time to upgrade cameras and lens’. Here’s my question: Canon EOS 5d Mark IV or Nikon D850? Price difference for body aside, which do you like or not like, pros/cons to either? Thanks in advance to the decent folk for the non-troll answers!

While both are top-notch bodies with some great lenses available for them, if I were to start a totally new system at this point, I would go mirrorless (Canon R or Nikon Z). Newer technology, lighter weight, some really fantastic new lenses, and the ability to take "heritage" lenses in both systems. We're looking at a lot of bucks here, may as well get state-of-the-art.

Why not the Pentax K1??? Its a fantastc camera at 1/2 the price of either the Nikon or Canon and all your Pentax lenses after 1976 will mount and fully function.

If limit to the 2 choices I personally don't know. I think the Nikon takes better pictures but I like the Canon better.

Having managed a camera store back in the day (Bennett's in New Orleans) I have learned that the single most important factor when choosing a camera is ergonomics. The spec sheets are nice and all, but the way a camera balances in your hands and the controls fall under your fingers naturally and the ease with which you can use the information in the viewfinder all contribute to how pleasant, or not, the experience of shooting is (and, by extension, how often you will use the camera).

Further, while mirrorless (I prefer the term EVIL - Electronic Viewfinder Interchangeable Lens) cameras can be great (I moved from a Nikon system to Fuji X-T) the viewfinder issues can be more important - since you've been used to the optical viewfinder you may well want to experience the electronic viewfinder experience, as it does differ.

You may be well served by renting a couple of cameras for a week's time to see how you like using them in the real world rather than relying on the (usually) well meaning but often not helpful advice from others.

What is your evaluation based on all the research you have done? There lies your answer.

Read as many reviews and comparisons as you can. Basically, each one can take great pictures.

I would go mirrorless before I buy a very heavy camera as the D850 .

I sold cameras to in the seventies. I used to tell customers - you are spending a lot of money on this camera. As long as you are choosing a quality brand, make a camera you feel good about using and carrying around. It has to feel right in your hands, not some technical reviewers.

There are people producing fabulous images with all kinds of camera gear - at the highest levels, the technology matters less than you think.

The advice above and in more detail from f8lee a couple of posts ago is the absolute best you will get.

Specs are useful to establish that a system meets your technical needs but what counts much more is how the camera (and lenses etc) feel in you hands. Certain things you'll get used to, grow into, but one camera will always feel more "right" than another. THAT'S the one.

You really have to touch and feel and hold your choices. Both cameras are great. I traded in my Nikon gear when I switched to a micro 4/3s Olympus e-m5 II. Features aside, the camera felt good in my hands. All the buttons felt right and the dials were in the right place. Because of the comfort factor, I take it with me much, much more frequently and have become a better photographer as a result. If you don’t have a camera store near you, rent your choices. You’re about to spend a lot of money, so try before you buy!

Given your two choices. The only way to go is with Nikon. I use Nikon and I know from experience that Nikon is the best brand. I know you are getting a lot of long complicated replies. Just keep it simple and go with the best, which is Nikon.

The live view autofocus on the Canon is a little faster than Nikon, but the Nikon has a higher resolution sensor. The Canon also has built in GPS, (and I think the Nikon does not.)

I think the viewfinder on the Nikon is slightly larger, the video cropping is slightly less, the autofocus tracking (except in video) is a little faster, and the tilting LCD a little easier to see.

I personally prefer the Nikon D850, but you really can't go wrong with either one. They are both fantastic cameras, and will take great pictures (and hold their value) for many years.

Obviously, your own words say that you've been happy with Pentax, so why switch? As MT said, the K-1 is an excellent camera and will serve you well for a long time. Don't be lulled into being a traitor to your camera brand just because Canon and Nikon get all the attention. It really would be foolish to consider switching.
