No matter what is used, someone will complain.

Odd statement, hope you are joking - You have it bass-ackwards, I do truly love America, and our planet, that is the reason for my concern!!!!!!!!!! I want a beautiful, safe and free land for my children and grandchildren, not an environmental disaster wrapped in red, white and blue......................

Then go to India and similar countries and control the plastic garbage. Those photos are not America.
It is easy to bash America, but go to Russia or China the absolute worst polluters and say what you say here. They are who you need to condemn. Then once they and the rest of the world have caught up with the USA then you can talk about cleaning up the USA.

Why don't you go somewhere else, please. I didn't bash America at all, but I do expect all who live here to treat her well, I condemn any pollluters. What is all that trash, plastic and garbage I see on the roadsides? Who did it? Industrial pollution - who did it? You just go on wearing your patriotrism on your sleeve or your hat, not in your heart and mind.......................

One of the big reasons for plastic was shipping costs.
Plastic bags are thinner and lighter.
And if they get damp-ish, no problemo.
Ask at the register- how many bags us a stack *this* high.
We've got plastic bags *still* out here in LA. They really only last a few times before that heat seam splits.

I have several of the big blue TRADER JOE insulated bags. Some of them are over a decade old and I know will hold 40-50 lbs if needed.

I guess that it is not the product but what is done with it. It is irresponsible people who improperly dispose of a product any where in that chain of custody.
Don't punish all for the few. Punish the few severely.

I’m going to split the difference here as an environmentalist who has traveled the world a bit and who lived thru the 60s and 70s.

Should we all work to have a cleaner planet? Sure. Nobody is for dirty air/water.

Have we made amazing strides on both fronts in the last 50 years? Incredibly so. I can remember Lake Erie and the Rouge River burning.

If you travel abroad and get away from tourist zones, much of the world is a lot worse today than the US was in 1969.

By world standards we are close to the garden of Eden.

The same groups selling man made global warming are the same groups that were selling man made global cooling.

I have no faith in either camp as nature is far too powerful to be vetoed by the follies of man.

The reason to live an eco friendly life is because you feels it the right thing to do.

I have actually lived for years out of country on several continents.
I have seen and lived in the poorest areas with the people eating with them and observing their plights.
That is why I get angered when the cleanest nation in the world, except for Indian reservations in areas hidden from idiot tourists, is bashed. Europe still has a long ways to go as well.
So yes, been there, done that.

Any kind of a change will, in all likelihood, will receive some resistance. Our taking our canvas bags from the car's trunk will simply become a habit. In our country, change takes time.

Okay, showing my age here, but do you remember our taking back our soda glass bottles for the refund? That became easy. Same was true with glass gallon milk bottles. Pay a deposit, and have it returned with we bring the glass bottle back.

I think it is Roosters on Grand here in St. Louis, that on the table along with the sweeteners are wooden stir stick. No straws. We really change change.

Glad to hear of the paper bags. Wish they were here in Kansas, used to be years ago and they switched to the cloth bags we paid $1. Worked great, no paper and no plastic!! Then about three years later, back to the plastic. Customers said the plastic was easier to use, unload throw them away...NOT RECYCLE... they didn't want to house the plastic bags!!

What a waste of recycle!!

Paper recycles better than plastic!!
And the heavy bags can be used several times thus cutting down costs by the customer!!

Thanks Jerry and Mark for praising the riddance of the plastic!!!

Agree with you Dave
We live just north of Cheyenne Bottoms Wetlands - drives me crazy to see the fields and ditches full of plastic bags... They need to eliminate the plastic bale twine and wrap too - very frustrating to see that tossed in the ditches...

Yeah, me too! They're excellent!
I also have several newish Vons bags that may carry 20lbs to the car, twice.

Ulster County, NY, where I live, no longer allows stores to give customers plastic bags. They can bring their own bag, or they can buy a paper bag for five cents. Looking further into this, it seems that stores have to buy the bags from the County, and that's why they charge the customers. The bags have the name of the store, but they also have County info about recycling printed on them. I'll pursue this further to find out what really going on.

I've never liked plastic bags. The first I saw of them was in England in 1974 (I think). We "caught up" years later.

How many plastic bags and straws could be made from the plastic in 1 automobile?
How many from 1 camera?
What about infusion bags and medical tubing?
If plastic is so bad then never buy an automobile, any photographic equipment or refuse all medical equipment and supplies made with evil plastic.
Bags and straws are such a minuscule portion of plastic waste.
