htbrown:

I assume the OP is talking about setting the camera to the Manual (M) shooting mode and turning on Auto ISO. This is a "semi-automatic" mode.

To your photographer-camera dialog: Yes, if you change the aperture and/or shutter speed the camera will adjust ISO to keep the same exposure. If you want to deviate from that, you use Exposure Compensation.

Doesn't that defeat the purpose of manual mode? Consider this scenario:

Photog takes a picture.
Photog: Hmm, that's too dark. I'll open up the aperture.
Camera: Hmm, that's going to be too light. I'll adjust the ISO.

But ..... so what ?

many people use manual exposure not to control the exposure but to have the ability to pick the aperture (for DOF) and shutter speed ( for either motion freeze or motion blur).

If you read the book "Understanding Exposure" by Bryan Peterson he emphasis on picking the right aperture and shutter speed for those purpose and not so much to get the correct brightness.

I don't need the book to know that I need to select a shutter speed to freeze motion and an aperture that gives sufficient DOF ..... somehow I learned that from fifty years of experience. I am so glad that my Pentax KP's graceful handling of high ISO values means that I no longer have to compromise between the two.

I never recommend the book but so many people read it and think that's the best book for exposure and thus so many people did it accordingly.

i use a 800 f8 lens from the 80 s , it work fine like you said on AP , also same on manual mode , use the histogram to check exposure , or use AP to see what setting work . also a hand held light meter will do . i have a few non cpu lenses , photo at its basic.just fun .makes your brain cells active .
