A disagreement here, a Pentax DSLR has the K-mount system and thus any K-mount lens ever made will fit every Pentax DSLR currently or previously made. Yes, Pentax made some lenses with a screw mount attachment but all K-mounts will fit the DSLRs from Pentax. And Pentax has a longer history, over 50 years with the K-mount. Just saying.

Again, putting a lens on a camera does not make it usable.
I can put an old Leica thread lens on the Canon R.
You can put old Pentax M49 lenses on the Canon EF and EFs cameras and meter, focus to infinity etc. You can put Nikon lenses on EF and EFs bodies as well.
No difference.
The point is people say I can put my ancient lens on x DSLR but then forget to mention that there is NO AF, No metering etc.
With Canon ALL EF lenses work perfectly on ALL EF, EFs, M and R cameras with absolutely no loss of features or function. That is completely unique to Canon. 95% of current photographers have no clue about ancient systems except from history books. To even remember the old Canon FD you need to be at least 50 years old. I know most members here seem to be in their 80's but that is a small demographic of users today.
If you got the first EOS film camera that would have been about 32 years ago now. The lens you got will still maintain ALL functions with the latest R series and even better with the Custom Function adapter.
Sorry the argument about one's 60 year old equipment is irrelevant to a vast majority of those today using DSLRs.

You should go with Nikon. You can never go wrong with Nikon. Their entry level camera is the 3500. For the money there is no better entry level camera on the market. Also by going with Nikon you can take advantage of their lenses and other products.

Hi, I'm looking to get my first dslr camera. I have always just had cheap point and shoot cameras in the past so will need one with a lens but dont want to spend loads of money. I was thinking around £250-300 for an entry level camera. Any suggestions greatly appreciated

Why not get a better quality P&S camera? If you start down the interchangeable lens rabbit hole, you will wind up spending a lot of money and lugging around a heavy camera kit. And, if you get a DSLR, you get to make a lot of noise taking pictures (mirror slap, shutter clack).

Why not just make a pin hole camera. All you need is a shoebox and you will never have to buy a lens. The OP wants a DSLR, there is nothing wrong with DSLRs. You are so negative. There are many things that can be done with a DSLR that a point and shoot can do. Your reply was not helpful at all. He is looking for suggestions on DSLRs.

And my suggestion is: don't get a DSLR. DSLR is old technology. There are much better options these days.

Your suggestion was to get a advanced point and shoot . The OP Wants to get an DSLR many of which are of new technology. Point and shoots are the newest technology and are limited. Once again your reply is of no use to the OP.

Why does the OP want a DSLR? I don't know. I do know that it would be a bad choice.

It is an excellent choice to get a DSLR.
Every EF and EFs lens ever made will fit and work 100% with no loss at all of any feature.
If they ever go mirrorless every one of those lenses will work 100% with the mirrorless camera. In fact with the R system all those excellent lenses will be enhanced with new added features.

Excellent choice for the DSLR camera manufacturers. Not necessarily for the photographer. Depends on what they want to do with their camera.

I would guess take good snapshots.
Can not think of too many other uses for cameras.

One can take photographs (versus snapshots) with any camera. One can take snapshots with most cameras (inluding and quite often with a DSLR). Hard to do with a pinhole camera or large format film camera, but maybe.

A camera is a tool. The intent will drive the both the choice of tool and the product.

It doesn't matter why he wants a DSLR... Just because you think it may not be a good choice, doesn't really matter. It is his choice and his choice alone.

His choice, my advice.
