Totally disagree with the popular vote, especially #2 of an Osprey that has chewed the head off of a mostly hidden fish. It is not a good capture of this majestic raptor. The Eagle however even though it's partially blocked by the pine limbs is in it's classic pose (wings spread) and is pretty sharp and the pine tree even adds to the natural setting.
(the osprey is sitting on a man made object and certainly does not depict "Wildlife".

Ummm…. County Fair, not birders' convention. Just sayin'

Our county fair allows only one entry per category. I have several in mind for the "Wildlife" category, and don't know which to choose. What would you choose?

Thanks!

I like mama and her calf...

I like 3. In its own natural habitat. The story fills the frame. Perhaps a bit off the right edge but not much. Keep the balance as you have it. All great shots.

Some more votes for number 3! I think it all depends on what the judges are looking for. Is it art, or subject matter? How sophisticated are county fair judges? I think a judge not trained in the subtleties of composition, sharpness, etc. would vote for 3 based on the subject and rare pose.

I'm a rank amateur photographer. I've never entered a contest. I'm clearly in the minority liking #3.

My 7 year old daughter won a contest back in 1994. It was a State of Florida "Coastal" theme contest for kids from the entire state. We were living on a bay with mossy live oaks. I marched her out at sunrise with a disposable Fugi. She snapped it and went back in. Five minutes spent. It was a blurry sunrise shot. The sun was a half circle, the sky orange, an old dock in the midground, overhanging moss in the foreground. Nicely composed, but not at all sharp. I think the subject matter won it.

I guess there are (at least) two kinds of good photography: 1. Great art, and 2. capturing a great moment. Masterpieces will have both.

Good luck! It’s a great shot. Let us know how it turns out.

All of these are very nice, but I'd go with the second one, personally. The framing and focus are great - sometimes the presence of branches and foreground foliage can distract from the image, especially in a competition.

I agree.

I know that I'm bucking the trend here but the two moose would be my choice. The osprey shot is cool but they tend to be fairly common. I've take a bunch of them too! There's something about the moose shot that makes it stand out from the mundane and gives me a bit of a "warm fuzzy".
