I have some very beautiful pics of the sky at dusk, over nearby lakes … they're really quite gorgeous!!!

But, I don't wish to spoil their natural beauty, by putting them up, and then, having them nit-picked!!!

It's the same story since he joined. He can't take honest criticism. In his mind his pictures are beautiful and doesn't want strangers destroying the illision. He once said he wouldn't show his best pictures because he may want to sell them.

Can you really make a living selling pictures, sight unseen?

This thread has been all over the place. It amazes me how the topic can change so quickly. I would prefer that contributors stay on topic and start a new thread if they want the conversation to go in a different direction. Perhaps my post is off topic as well. If so, please accept my apologies.

R - it's okay! … Whenever I put up a Topic Post - the thread tends to go in many directions, because it was MY post. I've noticed - most of the time - when I comment on OTHER PEOPLES' Posts - the subject DOES stay - pretty much - to the Topic first ventured …

If this one stays true to the title - I shall stay with it. But, if it goes too far afield - I will have to abandon it, as I have done - a couple of others, recently submitted. But, I think this one deserves continued scrutiny.

Just because you're TOO LAZY to look for them, Bill … it doesn't mean - they're not HERE!

Bill - I think the models I mentioned - are pretty much current. But the Nikon DX line - is supposedly - being phased out - all but the D7500. I think that's a pretty harsh move - don't you?

There's really not any "BEGINNER" MILCs available, currently - to replace them … is there?

The beginner cameras with no mirrors have permanently attached zoom lenses. It has been going on for a long time, so the loss of the entry level SLRs will not matter very much. At least it is how Nikon users that eventually end up with lens bags start out.

Retina - those cameras to which you refer are known as Bridges (with fixed lenses.) The cheapest Bridges can be picked up for under $300 (Panasonic Lumix FZ-80, for example.) But, Sony has a couple of models well over the $3000 mark. So, hardly - can they be considered - Beginner Models. My use of that term - applies to DSLRs (interchangeable lenses) which typically can be found for around $500 WITH 18-55 lens.

I took your original question to be about the impact of the loss of the low cost lines of DSLRs spurred by the rumor about Nikon. I think the impact will be minimal since the other wide road for new users are the bridge cameras, as it has been for a while. Before replying again, I looked up what I could about the rumors about Nikon dropping its entry level DSLRs. My hunch is they will try to attract new users toward their more expensive mirrorless cameras by replacing the D3/5xxx lines with something like a Z6000 or Z7000 (just a guess). With continued improvements in shots per battery charge the impact of the fading of the DSLR should be brief and painless.

As far as families go, younger members won't miss the DSLR at all. They will be using bridge, entry level mirrorless, and phone cameras. Another consideration about families depends on the compatibility with older lenses. A few younger ones might be more likely to take an interest in photography if they can have fun with older interchangeable lenses they inherit from grandparents and parents.

Exactly, Retina … to address your last point, first. If the younger folk inherit older lenses, from family - they WILL want to find a beginner (read - inexpensive) MODERN DSLR to use - WITH those lenses. If Nikon pulls the entire Entry-Level series - where will they go? ... To the D7500? … It retails at $1300 b/o!

Now, then … the older lenses won't work on the new FF MILCs w/o an adapter - which is an additional expense - and also - quite cumbersome, I gather … complicating things, all the more.

There's been no announcement by Nikon of any upcoming Z6(000) nor Z7(000) models. Have you seen?

Bridge cameras - typically, use the 1/2.3" sensor - which may be acceptable by many. But, if you try and get into detail work on your pics - you will soon see the entire composition go to hell in a handbasket!!!

The D500 is not going to be fazed out and is not a beginner camera

Nikon has several paths they might follow, and we won't know which one they will until they do it.

1. introduce a new beginner DSLR.

2. introduce new higher level DSLR, then follow the Sony method of lowering price of former higher-level cameras and use them as beginner cameras.

3. phase out all DSLRs {but they probably should wait until Z's are better received before they do that}.

1) They already did, RE - the D3500 …

2) They already announced one - the D8000 …

3) I think I read somewhere - there's a newer and BETTER Z - in the works, already … we'll see!!!

We can' really understand the announcements until we also see what is dropped over time {which companies tend to do without talking much, if any}

If that's a reference to the D8000 - it would seem that will supplant the D7500 - but, I suspect they will BOTH be on the market, together - for quite some time to come.

I can't see Nikon dropping ANY of the Z models, RE … they will just add to the Z6 and Z7 …

Don't know what they will do with the two beginner lines … we can only suspect, at this point.

It seems the D750, D850 and Df will continue, as is. The D6 has been announced. Watch the D5 drop!!!
