Buy my paper at costco.com. Paper is very good and the price is super excellent. Very true that ink is not cheap when you by Canon inks. But my brief experience with cheaper ink has not been worth any savings. Only Canon inks are used in my two Canon printers: MX922 and Pro100.

I love my Pro 100 printer and use third party ink. If you enjoy what you are doing cost is not the number concern.

What is the approx cost per print for 8*10 with the various printers including paper and ink

Never considered it.

I get most of my prints from Costco. Very efficient for me.
The 8x12 paper I use is about $.50 a sheet. I've no idea how many I get out of a set of cartridges as each image uses different amounts of each color. (I like separate tanks as opposed to throwing a tri-color tank when all of one color is used.)

I only print one or two here and there at home.

I use a Canon MG8200 series printer. Ink is pricey. They sell the printer at cost and nail you with the ink. I also use Ink Farm. 1/2 the cost of OEM ink. After 3 years a printer nozell clogged. So I cleaned the print head and installed new ink tanks. Works as good as new.To learn how to clean the print head, go to You Tube

I got lucky. Amazon had a one-day sale on an HP 2600 printer for $19, and the ink is not the most expensive I've seen.

It sure is - a gallon must be a lot more than an ounce of Gold!!!! It is one of the Tech Worlds greatest scams!!!! At one point I had 4 working printers at one time because it was (really) cheaper to buy another printer on sale than it was to buy the ink.... they figured that one out too, and now a bunch of the inexpensive printers come with cartridges that don't hold much ink, but let you get started!!

"...Nobody uses Epson?" Yes and not a fan... poorly designed, cryptic user interface and expensive ink...

Missing my HP LaserJet which was the most robust and reliable printer I've ever used...

Sad, very sad but true...

Epson is short-stopping this now by only packaging "demo" cartridges that hold a very limited amount of ink on their new models...

The entire printer industry have adopted a "drug dealers" paradigm...

I recommend either Canon or Epson photo printers. Most important things to look at are the number of cartridges (don't go with less than 6), the format size, connectivity, range of papers it can handle (thickness) and archival properties, which gets into the dye based or encapsulated pigment based ink issue. If you want to print panoramas, then look for a roll fed printer. You will also want to look at the reviews for cost / print.

I am happy with my Epson XP-15000. [The Canon version is the iP8720] It is a $270, 13"x19", 6 color dye based ink printer that just plain works. Quality is excellent, even for B&W prints as it has both gray and black cartridges, but if you want to crank it up a notch, look for an 8 cartridge printer, especially if you want to do a lot of B&W prints. The other printer I am considering is the Epson P800 roll fed 8 color pigment based ink printer, but I can't quite justify the $1200 price for home use.

My HP printer that I bought about 10 years ago is proving too expensive in terms of ink - and also is not working very well with colour photos.

what would people recommend - I use it for word documents and printing photos in colour, I was happy with the print quality of my old HP (c4480), but shelling out the price I paid for the printer each time I need a new colour cartridge seems a bit steep!

For years I kept a Canon Printer for photos and a Brother MFC for text type printing, Canon finally died, tried printing on photo paper with the Brother, works good enough for an occasional give away, I'm not replacing the Canon, now YMMV, Bob.

The Ink is the thing. I bought a Epson ET2500 for everyday printing. I have an Epson Photo 1400 that I've replaced the cartridges with refillable ones. I can't tell a lot of difference in the quality on letter size paper. The 1400 is good for up to 13x19 prints.

I had an Epson and the ink would run off the paper. talk to one of their reps and he told me you had to buy into the Epson system in order to get good results. Epson printer, epson ink epson paper or forget it.
I did and got rid of the printer.

I had the Canon Pro-100 and I bought cartridges from eBay that were about 1/10th the cost of new from Canon. They worked like a charm. I think new from Canon you'd spend $250 for the set of ink, but on eBay I got a complete set for $35 or so. But that's not all, the printer is only about $150 after rebates and it prints 17x13 prints.
