My HP printer that I bought about 10 years ago is proving too expensive in terms of ink - and also is not working very well with colour photos.

what would people recommend - I use it for word documents and printing photos in colour, I was happy with the print quality of my old HP (c4480), but shelling out the price I paid for the printer each time I need a new colour cartridge seems a bit steep!

Have look into Canon’s printers. I’m considering one of the newer one’s from Canon.

I have a Canon MX920 all-in-one (printer, scanner, FAX).
It works nicely, separate tanks for each color.
Two trays (Upper I use for 4x6 and 5x7); Lower will take 8x12)
Duplex scanner multiple sheet feed.
(The 922 might have replaced the 920???)
Tanks are about $70 a set (5)(Tri-color and two blacks) for the XL(extended life)

Define cheap - up-front cost or operating cost? You might want to look at the newer "megatank" printers - they cost a little more, but come with large ink cartridges which are inexpensive to print and to replace, so your cost/copy is definitely lower. Since I already have a printer which I only make photo prints from I replaced a dying everyday printer with a Brother MFC-J995DW. I've been pleased. Photo quality is pretty good, but you could also find megatanks with more ink cartridges, which is likely to enhance photo quality.

Is your focus Quality or cost/page?
(Difficult to get both for cheap).

I have a Canon IP8720. Does 13x19 too. Decent quality, low cost. Ink is expensive.
Pro10,100,1000 are more expensive with increasing upfront costs, not sure about operating costs.

Burkephoto is the best guy to comment as I think he actually is from the printing business.

Printer ink is one of the most expensive fluids on the planet. There's no getting away from that. They know you need ink, and they can charge whatever they want.

I got lucky. Amazon had a one-day sale on an HP 2600 printer for $19, and the ink is not the most expensive I've seen.

I have the HP OfficeJet Pro 8710. No problems! The instant ink program is top notch, never run out of ink.
Mine is set up on wireless, excellent printer, ink program and service!

There is a truth to printing.
Printers get cheaper every day.
It is not uncommon to pay for the cost of the printer over and over buying ink.
More expensive printers have larger ink reservoirs and longer lasting print heads. Their cost per page is less for supplies, however you fork over more money buying the printer. This makes sense if you print a lot.

It is the Schick razor story.
Buy the cheap razor and they get you with the blades. Buy a more expensive electric razor and you pay less for blades.

I have the TS9020 and am very satisfied. It only prints up to 8x10, but that's the size I hang in my home office anyway.

Problem is, most of the printers that people have had for a while are no longer available......

Newer printers are relatively cheap, ink is not. If it’s only a few good prints you’re looking for, consider a commercial printing service. I’m satisfied with what my HP 440 does for my few color prints.
