My first post addressed the original post quite succinctly, I think. The OP has to think for him/herself. WE sure as heck don't know what the OP wants to do.

The 50mm is usually the standard as it is to have the same view as the human eye. ( some have said the 35mm is the eye view)
This is my repeat answer of the original question.

With respect, a go-to lens can be any lens that a photographer has on his camera most of the time. The question was about a 35 or 50, not other lenses. The OP's go-to lens does not have to be the same as yours. Dennis
With respect, that’s what I wrote in response to both the topic title, which you must have overlooked, and the posted question itself. You and I are actually in agreement.

Three possible answers:
35mm
50mm
BothAnd you will get some of all of these.

Actually I just reread the question from the OP. He simply asks which the members would use, 35 or 50. He doesn't ask anything about film/digital/crop frame or full frame. Just 35 or 50.
I think the answers would be pretty interesting IF members stuck to the question asked.
Dennis
The OP was evidently unaware of the inherent ambiguity in his question as he didn’t specify the camera model or sensor size he’s employing. This omission is a crucial part of the question! Why do you think so many people are pointing it out? They are sticking "to the question asked"!

I’m sorry, but unless you can satisfactorily address the preceding, I find your comment to be downright silly. If I am missing something, please do enlighten me.

This is sounding like a food fight. Let's all have the OP take the ball and run (or walk) with it.

Enough said!

Jeez, didn’t mean to provoke! My camera is
a Nikon D5300 (crop or Dx sensor) 24mm x
16mm. Only lens so far is Nikon
AFS 18-140mm. Thanks for everyone’s
opinion. 35mm seems best lens

Neither. For me, it's a 24-70/2.8 on a full frame.

I've settled on a 18-300 mm VR as my walk around lens. I was satisfied with results with 50 and even with 35 & 85 but with good zooms that are pretty crisp I'll have my 50, 105 macro, 11-16 mm & tripod, etc nearby but that zoom is my fav when I'm on the move.

Now with changing light I must juggle ISO & shutter regularly as focal length varies - much more than with a prime. And if I reach out I really appreciate VR.

24-120 mm is my STANDARD LENS. That said, IMHO, I like the 50. I believe it is more useful than the 35. If I was doing it all over again, I would go 50 first, then either a 28 or 24.

Amen!

I started out using the 50mm, then added a 135mm, then a 28mm, finally working down to a 20mm; and up to a 200mm lens. I didn't like the 35mm, because it wasn't wide enough, and around 20mm the off-axis distortion starts.

Now, my "go to" lens is the 24-120mm f/4; outside that, the 70-200 f/4, and a 16-35 f/4. Those cover the bases without getting loaded down. I do have a 70-200 f/2.8 Sigma, and a Nikon 200-500 f/5.6 for more reach and speed.

Look, we can go back and forth forever. Well you can. I don’t have the time or inclination. Technically you are correct. But he asked a simple question for which I thought he wanted a simple answer. The OP seems to agree with my assessment.

Full frame or crop sensor, without throwing in a basketful of what if’s, I would still take the 35. Had he asked about a crop sensor and a 28mm then I would have gone for the 28mm. But he didn’t. I answered his question as asked. You threw in variables. Give him credit to come back and have a discussion if he wishes.

Keep going if you must but I have things to do.

Since I missed your actual post I have absolutely no problem with you and do agree.

whether one prefers 1 focal length or another is a personal opinion, with no right or wrong answer. Most film cameras came with a 50mm lens, often called normal, as it has the same angle of view as the human eye. So for a full frame, 50mm and crop about 35mm. B ut any length can be used as "Standard". Some use "Walk around" for a standard, mine is an 18-200. Is it a great lens-no but it is good enough, sometimes good enough really is good enough

I read somewhere that Henri Cartier-Bresson used a Leica with a fixed 50mm lens on it, which was what he could afford in those days.
Don’t know if that story is true or not.

If the story is true, and if he could have used a 35mm lens, who knows if he would have preferred that?

I have the book: Life in 50mm: The Photographer's Lens. There are a couple of pages about Bresson in the book. He described working with a 90mm and a 35mm lens. He preferred a 50mm to those.
