50mm or 35mm

Go to for birds and wildlife - Sigma Sport 150-600
Landscape - 45mm or 85mm PC-E, or 70-200 F2.8
Architectural - 24mm or 45mm PC-E
Not sure? Take everything from 14mm to 600mm.

I have a 35 and a 50. They sit on the shelf.

I have a 14-24, 24-70, 70-200, and 200-500. Which one gets used depends on what I'm shooting, but they all get some use.

If I'm out and about, I will generally use my 28-300.

This is a question that would best be answered by saying, what ever you like. But I'll tell you what is my "go-too" lens, which will upset the conventional applecart. Both on film and FF digital, and with the equivalent on "crop frame" sensors, it's the 28. So say it, I'm nuts.

Short answer:

On a full-frame body, the lens' "effective" focal length is the lens' actual focal length..

On a crop-sensor body, the "effective" focal length is the lens' focal length x the crop factor of your body. Examples: Canon's crop factor is 1.6. Nikon is 1.5. Micro 4/3 is 2.0.

Is your camera crop-sensor or full-frame?

What "effective" focal length do you WANT TO USE?

Traditionally, 45-55mm is considered "normal".
35mm is mild wide-angle.
80mm is short telephoto, also considered a good portrait focal length.

IN THEORY (WITH A 35MM FILM CAMERA) THE 50MM LENS WAS WHAT THE EYE SAW (SOME SAID 35MM). TOSDAY A "FULL FRAME CAMERA" IS THE SAME AS A 35MM CAMERA. BUT, WE ARE NOT CONSTANT WITH THAT (35mm X 24mm). SO BASICALLY A FULL FRAME IS THE FULL FRAME CAMERA WHEN USING A LENSE, THE LENES IS AS MARKED. WHEN YOU DON'T USE A FULL FRAME CAMERA THEY NEED TO BE RECALCULATED ie. WITH CANON A 100mm IS A 160mm (200 IS 320 etc.) Nikon simpler 100 is 150 and 200 is 300. each brand must be corrected for true lens focal length unless they are full fram.

I hope this helps. I use both full and non full frame and have stickers on my lens caps with both sizes (ie. 100/160-- 10/16 etc)
IN THEORY (WITH A 35MM FILM CAMERA) THE 50MM LENS ... (show quote)

With respect, there is no reason to shout by using all caps. In most forums it is classed as rude.

Actually I just reread the question from the OP. He simply asks which the members would use, 35 or 50. He doesn't ask anything about film/digital/crop frame or full frame. Just 35 or 50.

I think the answers would be pretty interesting IF members stuck to the question asked.

Can't answer the original question without knowing whether full-frame (digital or film) or crop-sensor, and what he/she wants to be ready to shoot.

Yes you can. You simply say you choose either a 35 or 50 as I did. You are assuming he is not capable of figuring it out.

That would depend on which camera I'm going to be using and what I'm going to be photographing. I don't really have a "go to" anything without those two questions being answered first.

24-120 mm is my STANDARD LENS. That said, IMHO, I like the 50. I believe it is more useful than the 35. If I was doing it all over again, I would go 50 first, then either a 28 or 24.

Love this lens. I had the 28-70 zoom but when it died I bought the 24-120 and love it for the greater reach that it has. The are is some compromise in shallowness in depth of field but I rarely need the 2.8 for light gathering.

Just asking the original question would lead one to question his ability to figure it out. Figure WHAT out?
