Spent the last few weeks in England - had a great time. Left the beast and lenses at home and took only a pocket-friendly Canon G9X, since this was just a fun vacation trip with my wife.

One of the places we visited was the Tower of London - very amazing history and construction. Some interior areas, such as the chambers where the Crown Jewels are on display, do not allow any photography.

For you younger hoggers: The last description is a reference to one of the best movies of all times, made in 1951. If not familiar, Google it. Forget the more recent remake.

It's one of England's most remarkable places. The execution block (where some people lost their heads) always makes me pause... and rub my neck!

The Tower grounds also feature the Beefeater Guards and the worm-eating Ravens, who are wing-crippled so they can't fly away.

They seemed to fly short distances around the grounds OK - but we were told that they are fed 1/2 pound of raw beef every day to also encourage them to stay around. The legend is that if the six ravens leave, the castle will fall. They also have a 7th "reserve" raven......

The Ravens' wings are clipped, to cripple their airworthiness. This, from various sources including a tour guide and a Beefeater guard. If the ravens leave, the British empire will fall. Not much of a fall though, its currently collapsing even with the birds present.

Nice series.

We finished a cruise in London last July and got a small group evening tour of the Tower of London, lead by one of the Yeoman Warders (Beefeaters) and got to see the changing of the keys ceremony. We were not allowed to photograph the ceremony. Because it was in the evening, we didn't get inside any of the buildings, but saw most of the grounds. We were told that people wait years to get on the evening tour, as they only allow 40 people per day; thanks, Viking. As soon as I find time to finish post processing my photos, I'll post some.
