I too like your lace background Keni. Brought back some memories for me too, I had a great grandmother who collected buttons which I used to play with when I visited her. We'd sit in her bedroom (with off white lace curtains) and sort those buttons for hours on end. Thanks for sharing, Bev

I'm glad it brought good memories for you.

It reminded me of my Dad's mother also. thanks for the post, it really put my memories in overdrive.

She quilted, sewed and crocheted lace (even a few lace table cloths, curtains and bed spreads). She used the small needles and yarn that was basically just extra thick thread. She never did knitting though. The whole farm house had lace dollies etc all over. She made curtains and house dresses for her and my youngest aunt from cotton print cloth that came from the sacks the local mill made themselves from bolts of material for when farmers brought in corn and wheat to be ground. When Granddad took something to be ground he got a list of what patterns to ask for in the sacks.

And those quilts - a set for each bed in winter and a closet full of extras. When a lot of the family were all at the farm for a holiday - esp Christmas the kids slept on the floor in the corner behind the living room coal stove on a pad of quilts with another to cover up and homemade pillows filled with real feathers. The Christmas tree (Granddad had red cedars planted in the fence rows and that is where the Christmas trees came from) was in another corner of the living room and just enough light leaked around the lid of the stove you could see the polished hard wood walls and floors and old glass ornaments shine with a red-orange glint and the heat brought out the cedar smell. As kids none of us thought sleeping on the floor was a hardship, it was magic with a gentle sound track of pops, snaps etc from that coal stove. If the whole family was there another sleeping area for kids was the corner behind a large wood burning stove in the dining room at the back of the house. That was right next to the door to the kitchen and the kids sleeping there would wake up to the smell of a real farm breakfast being made. Home made ham, sausage, bacon, fresh* eggs, biscuits, fried potatoes, gravy, hot chocolate, fresh milk and coffee. The jams, jellies and butter were home made and the milk was from Granddad's cows that he milked between 4 & 5 every morning.

As to your flowers, there were Lilac bushes on two sides of the farm house trimmed to be hedges with a "gate/opening" to go through to the back yard.

Yes a lot of great memories. With a few of those "I miss it." tears thrown in. But those tears are also filled with joy. I close my eyes and in my mind that world lives again.

*The hens out in the chicken house were still fussing over having Granddad raid their nests on his way back to the house from milking the cows.

Robert thank you for sharing your wonderful memories. I live in the house my grandfather built and everywhere I look I am surrounded by happy memories like those. I cherish them all.
