iPhone vs Samsung cameras, is one better?

My choice of Samsung over iPhone has to do with other factors besides the quality of the camera, which is a minor factor. For smartphone photography the answer might be "neither" - LG, Huawei (politics and security aside) might have better built in cams, but since the cam quality is not a factor for me, Samsung is my choice - I am just taking quick family or documentary snaps or videos - which takes great quality images considering the tiny sensor/lens. For anything serious, I use the DSLR or other ILC.

I only have an IPhone 7s and my wife has a Samsung S8. I really can't say which is better. I don't have the newest ones from either company. Reading a lot of review it seems the better one is the one that has a lot of software processing like faked shallow DOF. Skin smoothing etc.. They don't test the camera for lens sharpness, distortion, noise level (without noise reduction in software).

NIKON! This gray panther is reminding you that this is a photography site that most people will agree that if you desire to take real photos then you should use a camera, not a telephone. Millennials,

I know, the usual battle is between Nikon and Canon, but this is the 21st Century. I don't need to hear from the gray panthers. This is a different toy. Will those who know please state their reasons for using one smartphone/camera over another? Granted the technology changes rapidly but what camera is better today?

I'm like most on this site, I like my DSLR much better, however my Galaxy Note 9 has a camera that will hold it's own against any of the other smartphones. It even has a pro feature (🤓) that let's you make the normal adjustments to exposure, iso, image stabilization and others.

Both Galaxy and iPhone can take excellent pictures, and the automation in both is awesome. For slide shows and small prints, I’ve seen many excellent photos from both. If you have need for very long lenses, very wide lenses with minimum distortion, HDR, macro, and the like, or make large prints, the best remains with DSLRs, or for a few experts, with film cameras.
I use Galaxy S10 only because quite a few years ago when I bought my first smart phone, Samsung had the best and I’ve stayed with it. Today the quality of both Android and iPhone photos are excellent. Apple’s iPhones may have an edge if you like the Mac and iPad connectivity - I’m not familiar with whatever Android etc may have to offer on that score.
You can’t go wrong with either iPhone or Samsung, and I’m sure some others are as good.

I have an iPhone 8+ that replaced my 6s... They take good pics, but as a macro photographer, they can't hold a candle to my Nikons.... For most general photography they are sufficient unless you want to print large images...

First admission... I have a head full of thick gray hair! However, don’t discount me for that! Lol

The quality of the cameras on cell phones is my humble opinion is remarkable considering it is basically an accessory to a phone. These cameras have advanced to the point that they are equal to what an expensive point and shoot camera was just a few short years ago. I now pretty much have a “good” camera at my disposal about 100% of the time. Will my cell phone camera replace my DSLR and Mirrorless cameras? No! But what a wonderful addition to that digital photography arsenal! I really like the camera on my iPhone XS. It has come a long way since my first camera “flip” phone. I have not had a Samsung phone since I bough my first iPhone. I will say this, being that I have nice cameras and good lenses, I don’t base my purchase of a cell/smart phone on the camera alone, but I do want a good camera on the phone. And yes, I will admit that I have made very good 16x20 prints from pictures taken on my 12mp iPhone camera. I can remember when 12mp was a digital standard for expensive DSLRs! Things will only continue to get better. This trend will not be just because of the cameras alone, but also because of the processors and the software accompanying smart phone cameras.

Thanks guys; I enjoyed reading al of your experiences with your assorted phones and I learned even more about them than I knew ,previously. I still carry an old flip phone that is rarely "ON" and only for emergency use, but I am becoming more enticed with the features these new babies offer and I might have to change my point of view as the price-points are declining due to market overloads. The new Motorola track Phone is a very attractive model with no real monthly fees and total One-time ownership and only minute purchases and or APT additions if warranted. My little T-Mobile flipper cost only $130.00/year as it is only used when I make a call and stays off 99% of the time......I'm Cheap !

Between iPhone and Samsung, the camera capabilities are pretty similar. Nikonbug is correct that the software in the Google Pixel 3 is a little ahead of the other two big players right now, but it is a pretty good bet that the other big players will catch up in due time.

The capabilities of software enhancement have not even really been tested yet. There are software programs that run on your phone that can automatically fix your make-up, smooth your wrinkles, whiten your teeth, and remove those dark circles under your eyes. This lets the photographer concentrate on things like lighting.

Well, when iPhone started with their bokeh ads I decided then and there that they didn't know much about photography. So I would give the edge to Samsung.
