Groundhog, Woodchuck or Whistlepig by any other name
is still a stand up Marmot. There are 15 different types of them.

A photographer friend of mine liked the photograph but wanted the groundhog to look more like a farmer.
So I accommodated him to bring him a smile.

How about him sitting on a roasting pan surrounded by potatoes, onions and carrots instead. My mouth is watering right now as I type.

Dennis, you are one sick puppy! But, OK, I’m willing to run with that. I used to come home from school to the sight of squirrels, rabbits, possums, etc. hanging by their hind legs in my uncle’s cherry tree - aka dinner.

And why would I be a sick puppy. Woodchucks are mammals and I am a meat eater. If God did not want us to eat animals He would not have made them out of meat.

Perhaps you think I am joking. I am not. Growing up we were fairly poor or at least low middle class. We didn't have a lot of meat. My brother and I filled our freezer with squirrels, rabbits, raccoon once because they were meat and edible. Maybe you should give it a try. Now I fill my freezer each year with deer, elk, antelope, rabbits, pheasants and the occasional waterfowl. You may see something wrong with that but millions of Americans would certainly disagree with you.

Dennis, I was just joking. We ate those things, too, and for the same reasons you did. In no way did I find anything “wrong” with your reply. As a matter of fact, ducks just popped into my mind. We ate duck a lot. My mother always talked about eating squab, which I later discovered was actually young pigeons. My mother only had an 8th grade education because her mother, my grandmother, died when my mother was very young. My mother left school because she had to take care of her brother and sister and the house. I clearly recall not having indoor plumbing until I was about 6. The outhouse hole got filled in, and the outhouse was converted into a tool shed. I grew up in the house next door and we were very fortunate in that our house was heated with coal. Oh, the dust in that basement on coal delivery day. Not to mention banking it at night, spreading it and adding more in the AM.

In no way did I mean any disrespect to you or to anyone else. I was simply visualizing the groundhog image (completely undressed for cooking) lying in the pan surrounded by the vegetables. That visual just made me giggle. Sorry if I upset you in any way. It was not my intention to do so!

BTW, I want to sincerely thank you for teaching me about using the “quote reply” button when I first joined UHH.

Forgive me for taking you seriously. My wife tells me often when I seem to get out of sorts at a computer reply, these people are strangers. They don't know you from Adam. They may be joking. I did not take you as joking and for that my apologies. Actually it was pretty good. Maybe it has just been a long day.

No apology necessary at all except from me.

I do recall offering advice on the Quote Reply. Thanks for reminding me.

When that woodchuck is out of the oven give me a call.
