Hi everyone, I used Flickr a lot until the SmugMug acquisition and the newly imposed limits; I found that I needed to upgrade to continue use. I still love Flickr and may upgrade to the pay service but what I would like to know is what other platform is out there for sharing photos and why do you like it?

Why not Smugmug? I had both before the acquisition, and moved to Smugmug afterwards. Yes, I pay. Maybe that's the issue?

You are not paying to show your images, you are paying to store them and to set up the tag, search, comment, etc features. There may be hidden costs on other sites, such as ads or the platform being able to use your images. I am staying with Flickr. I can upload my images at full resolution, write my own explanations, easily create photo albums, etc.

I use both Flickr and Fine Art America, primarily for display, since I pay FAA I don't feel the need for another paid venue, if I had to choose between the two I'd keep FAA not Flickr.

With Smugmug, you can retrieve/download your own images. You do not have that option with FAA 😢

I have been a Flickr subscriber ever since Yahoo! Photos was discontinued. There was an application to move photos and descriptions to Flickr provided and I did it. I especially like the hierarchical structure available in Flickr: photos into Albums; Albums into Collections: Collections into higher level Collections. I have 45,000 pictures on Flickr, but they are accessible via about 60 high-level Collections, drilling down several levels as needed. I consider the annual fee to be well worth what I receive in turn. I also like that there is a function of Adobe Lightroom that directly uploads photos into Albums in Flickr (and there is one for SmugMug, as well--my church uses SmugMug, so that function is useful to me, also).

The recent buyout by SmugMug seems to be going well. A few Flickr features have yet to be restored, but all my photos are in place and accessible.

I switched from Flickr to SmugMug a few months ago and never looked back. Easy to create albums containing full resolution pictures, organize & update them, and share with others. And if anything, the album pictures look better than the originals! What's not to like?

I like to store my photos in a place separate from my computer so that if something happens to my computer I'll have them. Google photos takes my photos and makes them smaller. It is good only for letting someone look at your photos. The other thing I hate is that the only way to store them is by date, not by what they are.

Does SmugMug have a hierarchical structure? That is the one feature of Flickr that I really like and use extensively. (Flickr also stores photos at full resolution, but has a function that resizes them for posting elsewhere.)
