Great book. Heard the author lives in Ocala but suffers with mental issues.

I met the author many years ago, about 1984. Unfortunately I met him while he was incarcerated at a Federal Prison Camp located on Eglin Air Force Base, Florida. I do not recall the reason he was there, but I do know he was respectful and considerate. He was not in the least bit arrogant or conceited, just a normal, basically good man who made a mistake and paid his dues.

I've never read his book but have often wished I had. Maybe I'll get it and read it soon.

I flew on one as an artillery forward observer but not in a combat situation. Regardless of the situation dark humor is a way of life in the military...probably a coping mechanism. If you want to read a good book about flying Hueys in Viet Nam, try "Chickenhawk" by Robert Mason who flew one there. Plenty of dark humor in the book, but it probably helped keep them sane since what they were forced to do, was totally insane. (ie one insanity definition bring, "doing the same thing over and over in the same situation but expecting different results")

I've read both of Robert Mason's books ... a real gem of an author.

This one is not funny. As I am sure you know too many died in those things

It's a JOKE not a dick ... don't take it so hard. Maybe you aren't familiar with veterans of that war but Dark Humor is a way of life for us.

While we are into comparisons: Ever laughed at a joke with a motor vehicle in it? Well in case you haven't heard far more people died in vehicles than have died in that war.

One of my good friends was a gunship "driver" in Nam (later now), another killed in a hot LZ. May God bless you all!

Nothing about that war is funny. I lost several friends from bullets and bombs and a brother to an early death from Agent Orange. The French told us we could not win that war, but we didn't listen. They knew what they were talking about.

The French would have been wrong if the military had run the war instead of the politicians.

Just like we're doing in Afghanistan.
