In searching for a solution, I discovered that SD cards can be or can become raw. More terminology to understand. Like raw photo files, this also just means raw material - as in unprepared - so capitalizing isn't necessary.

I've never run into that problem. When I have raw images on a card, they show up with an .NEF or .ARW or CR2 extension. I believe they are always in the same folder as the JPEG files, although I don't shoot raw+jpg anymore. It sounds like you don't have CR2 files on the card. The correct term, by the way, is "upload," since it is always in reference to your computer. You upload to the computer and download from it.

My suspicion is that the camera is not recording the CR2 files. If it were, they would be in the folder with the jpgs.
I already suggested the OP double-check his camera settings. How do we know it's even set to shoot raw

I think"simple" as referenced means PS & LR will simplify the process and you are good to go.

Simple is relative to the user.
PS/LR would be no simpler for me, only a different way.
I know my directory structure/filing methodology.

I have decided to jump into the world of raw. Right away I am having trouble getting a raw file into a folder so I can work on them. No, I do not have Photoshop. It sounds to me like you have never before used raw files. Cameras out of the box are probably not set to record raw files so that is most likely the problem. Check your manual to find out how to turn on the raw file recording (I can't tell you because I'm not familiar with Canon cameras). If you can't find your manual, you can usually download a PDF from the manufacturer's website.

I use Windows explorer to copy/paste, BTW I use PSP also.

What's simple for me is to use Windows Explorer to both transfer files (providing they are there) and to look at the JPEGs to see if I want to work on the RAW. (They're basically the same image.) I don't use catalogers, even though I have them. I know where my files are located.
"Simple" is relative to the best process for the user, eh?

Yes, the exact reason I shoot RAW + JPEG. Check out the JPEG first and then jump to ACR if you want to PLAY. Memory is cheap, shoot both and get more options. Never liked the Idea of the Lightroom file system.

Files of any kind are the same to Windows - the file extension tells the system what program to use to OPEN the file BUT the operating system will save/copy/store any file. You may not be able to view the photo in a raw file but you can manipulate the file its self.

Thanks Bob, I do know how to set the camera to shoot JPEG + RAW. The Raw files are there but some viewing apps do not see them.

I now have a game plan..... I use an old app called Finepix (I got it with a Fuji camera I once had) it is so neat as it will make a folder date named and load the pics from my SD card. OK so it will not see or load the Raw files (if I so shoot). So I open the SD card with "File mgr" and copy/paste the Raw files.

I have been using an old app called Downloader Pro. I paid $30 for it about 10 years ago and it was worth it. It allows me to specify a subject for the photos and it will rename the files with that name. I also add the date and time to the file name. It then saves the files in a folder with the subject name. The template for the file name and folder name are very customizable.

Oh, they see them but since they can't work with them only show you the file extensions they can work with.
I have a couple of programs that restrict the display to what the program can work with.
Drives me mad.
Explorer shows all.

Yes, of course, I find the folder, the JPEGs are there, but NOT the CR2 files. This is the mystery I am trying to solve.

It sounds to me that you may Not being shooting in RAW to begin with. Recheck your camera menu & style settings to make sure that it is doing so in Raw and not simply Jpegs.......stuff happens and it's usually something minor.
When I rec'd my 6DMkII.....it came from the factory set to work in High Res. Jpeg and I had to switch it to Raw but I didn't realize it at first because the FF jpegs were so beautiful compared to the crop versions I had been doing in my previous model that I never thought to check it out........daaaaa.

Good Luck man.....you'll get there.....don't quit !

OK... You say they are "there". How do you know that? Where are they? If the operating system can "see" the file, then it exists in your computer. So, the next task is to see if your software is compatible with your image version (CR2?). Some programs don't "see" the file because of version differences. You may need to update it.

One last thing, you will find experts here on UHH for almost any discipline. I am not an expert, but there are many here. Keep reading and communicating. One comment may contain the answer you are looking for. Good luck!

For as little as $40 you can purchase Affinity Photo. You buy it; you own it. It will open and process RAW files and perform all the functions of Photoshop.
