I have decided to jump into the world of raw. Right away I am having trouble getting a raw file into a folder so I can work on them. No, I do not have Photoshop. I use Paint Shop Pro, which will open and can do all of the post-processing I want, but first I must get the raw files in a folder. ..... HOW?

Copy them off your memory card. What camera are you using?

I am using a 6D2. You say "copy them off my memory card", well Bob windows photo does not even show the raw (cr2) files. I was told to download codaks for raw, but all the codaks I find are for windows "Media" (videos)

I've never heard of CR2 files not showing up in Windows Explorer. Codecs are necessary only to view thumbnails. Do you know which folder to open on your memory card in Windows? Look for a folder on the card called DCIM. All image files including raw and jpg should be in there.

Yes, of course, I find the folder, the JPEGs are there, but NOT the CR2 files. This is the mystery I am trying to solve.

Do you have files next to the jpg files that have some kind of logo on them? If so, those are the raw files, so you have them in your folder. You can't see them because the Canon 6 D II was released after your Windows version was. CR2 is the raw format Canon used to use, but they changed it with each model. I believe I read somewhere that if you update to the newest Windows 10 version, you can then add newer camera Codecs which include the CR2 files for your files.

If you see the files with icons, you might try to open them in the Corel program the way you normally open your jpg photos. Good luck.

1. Since you have jpg's, double-check your camera settings and make sure you selected raw+jpg. Maybe you intended to set for raw shooting, but did not. Far stranger things have happened

2. If your camera setting is OK, open Windows File Explorer, select the folder view that shows "details" so you can see file extensions. Are there cr2 in the list? If yes, right-click one of them and select "Open With..." Paintshop Pro. But, you may want to copy the entire folder of images from the camera to the computer first, and select from there.

If they are not on the card, the camera didn't save them or it saved them in a different directory.
Double-check that the camera is really set to RAW+L (if L is what you want).

Check to see if there may be other directories (Don't know why, my JPEG and RAW are in the same directory.)

Place your card in a reader that is connected to your computer. Open Windows Explorer and navigate to your memory card and double click on it. You may have to "drill down" through a couple of folders to find where the images are. When you find them, just drag and drop them to a folder on your computer.

If you want the simplest, easiest way to see the files as images, download a free copy of Faststone Image Viewer - which will open EVERY raw file. But learning how to use Windows Explorer for file management is an important skill.

For Pete's sake, get yourself the PS and LR CC bundle. It will make your life SOOO much simpler down the road.

What's simple for me is to use Windows Explorer to both transfer files (providing they are there) and to look at the JPEGs to see if I want to work on the RAW. (They're basically the same image.) I don't use catalogers, even though I have them. I know where my files are located.
"Simple" is relative to the best process for the user, eh?

My suspicion is that the camera is not recording the CR2 files. If it were, they would be in the folder with the jpgs.

If you've got a 6D mkII, why not try using the software that came with the camera, Canon DPP v4. It's pretty good. Available from the Canon website, all they want is the aerial no. of the camera.

I think"simple" as referenced means PS & LR will simplify the process and you are good to go.
