You may be correct here. Lens compression does happen but I'm not so sure. There are two areas in the photo where this effect is happening. I thought there would be one overall area in the center where this effect may occur. While another Hogger suggested it was camera shake. That too may be highly unlikely. I guess I'll have to experiment

Don't think that you needed that fast a SS, could use more DOF. Looks like that is the problem.
