What is often called "lens compression" is making them seem close when they are not. The robin is inside your DOF, the hawk is not, and probably outside by a good bit.
You may be correct here. Lens compression does happen but I'm not so sure. There are two areas in the photo where this effect is happening. I thought there would be one overall area in the center where this effect may occur. While another Hogger suggested it was camera shake. That too may be highly unlikely. I guess I'll have to experiment
