There's strong rumor of a Canon "90D" coming later this year, which many think will replace both the 80D and the 7D Mark II. It's specifications, which are just informed guesses at this point, read a lot like a 7D Mark III (dual processors, 10 frames per sec, dual memory card slots), but with a higher resolution APS-C sensor (32MP) and, possibly, the AF system from the 80D (or an upgraded version of that). Up to now, the 7D Mark II has used its own, unique 65-point AF system that has a few more user-selectable patterns and tweaks than the 80D's 45-point AF system. The latter AF system is now also being used in 77D, Rebel T7i/850D and in the full frame 6D Mark II. It would be a cost saving measure for Canon to use it in yet another model, and is quite a capable system. Whether or not Canon will call it a "90D" isn't even known. That's just what folks like Canon Rumors website have been calling it. There's been some speculation... maybe it's just wishful thinking... that the price would be close to what the 80D sold for when it was first introduced, which was around $1100, if memory serves.... as opposed to the $1700 or so that the 7D Mark II sold for initially. (Note: "street" prices of both cameras have come down significantly in the years since their introduction.... 7DII is the older of the two and has seen more of that reduction, currently $1400... 80D is selling for $900 new.)

Only you can say if it makes sense to wait for the next APS-C model, which is ONLY SPECULATION at this time. There have been hints, but there's no solid info about the specs or the price, let alone when the camera might come available. Only Canon knows... and they ain't sayin'.

The 24MP 80D would be a significant upgrade from your 60D in many respects... Higher resolution and better image quality, higher performance AF system and more. Depending upon what you shoot, it might be an ideal camera for you. If you shoot action, the 7DII is superior for that... but at 20MP it's slightly lower resolution than 80D (though more resolution than your 18MP 60D).

IF a new model is released and is close to what's described above, prices for BOTH 80D and 7DII might be expected to drop as remaining stock is sold off. Prices of used and refurbished will likely drop, too. So it depends upon how urgently you feel the need to upgrade.... whether it's worth maybe $100 or $200 or more savings to wait and buy one later.

I like my 80D but I love my 7DII.
I want a version of the 7D with upgraded sensor etc. At 73 it will probably be my last camera upgrade so I want one I can keep using until I can't anymore.

A quick thought of 80D Refurbished vs 90D(?)

If refurbished is $749/799,then it is almost half the price of the new model. Guessing about $1600.

So the question is, are the new features worth almost twice the price?

Years ago I had a 40d, upgraded to a 5Dc and never looked back. I'm a reformed 35mm shooter, don't
need all the bells and whistles of the 5D Mark 1,000,000 or whatever. I recently bought a Tamron superzoom (a stabilized 28-300), that and a nifty fifty are all I really need as I don't shoot much if any WA. Thus 28 is plenty wide for what I shoot. Probably even 35 would do it but what the hell. <g>

The 80D is slated to be replaced this year by a major improvement over it.
Wait to get it or the 80D will likely drop in price to current used prices.

I bought a refurbished 80D about a year and it is fabulous in virtually every regard.

Wait until the 90D comes out - - Then get the 80D when the price drops. I bought into Canon with the 10D.
I currently have a 7D Mk-1 AND an 80D. The 80D is my go-to camera. The 7D Mk-1 is my back-up
Both cameras are better than I will ever be. How much camera do you need ??
IF you need to be on the bleeding edge - then wait for the 90D (If your pocketbook can stand it)
Otherwise wait for the 90D and get the 80D

I bought a new 80D on eBay (yes, a brand new USA one) for $749, upgraded from a 50D. Great camera but you may want to wait for the 90D...although you will pay for it!!! Personally the 80D will do all that I want to do.

Shane, I recently purchased the EOS-R mirrorless camera and I love it. It is lightweight and has many wonderful features. It has been a true workhorse for me. I do not know what an 80D sells for, but if it is anywhere near the EOS-R your might want to check it out. I bought the adaptor ring because I have many Regular Canon mount lenses along with Tamron and Sigma. I have gotten excellent photos with the camera.

You will be making a lateral move if you want to improve your photography go with a camera that has a full frame sensor.

I am shopping as well. The 80d is a significant upgrade over the 77d in many aspects like maximum shutter speed, frames per second, and it has built in IS. You can buy a good used one. The only negative on the 80d for me is that it is heavier.

I have an 80D, it does not have built in IS.
