I have the 28-300 on my d800e. I have compared it to my Nikkor 300 f/4, using the Edmunds resolution chart. Sharpness at 300 is very close, one or two line pairs. If you are getting images that are noticeably unsharp there is something wrong with your camera, lens, operator or a combination. Renting another lens is a very good suggestion.

Jeffrey, I have an 850 and a 28~300. That combination has
produced very sharp images for me. However, the lens has
a dodgy reputation. I'm very happy with mine and haven't
researched reasons for any deviation from that. --Bob
I have a very strong suspicion that you use
yours intelligently. My own experience with
that lens indicates that this is a necessity.
I use the lens on a D4s and find that the sweet spot for sharpness is f/6.3-7.1...
