Has anyone been there? Where are the best places to see moose along with waterfowl and birds? We are camping and plan to kayak.

Your best bets for moose are usually not on Moosehead itself, rather smaller quite lakes off the beaten path. If you check TripAdvisor for Greenville you will find #1 guide service is Young's. I couldn't agree more. Chris Young is a registered Maine Guide (which is a big deal in Maine.) He lives and breathes the backwoods.
We wanted to see moose and we saw like 7 in one morning. But our main wish was to see loons with chicks. He helped us pick a likely date and I got some one-day old chicks riding on momma's back.
Our time with Chris Young was the highlight of our two weeks in Maine.

I’ve been there many times, mostly in “film days” when I was more active. My advice is to hire a registered “Maine Guide” and explain what you’re looking to capture. Well worth the extra expense.
Best advice I can give for wildlife sightings is to focus on the hours just before and after dawn and dusk.

We were in a canoe with Chris, our guide doing all the paddling in the back. My wife was in the middle and I was sitting up front with my 200-500 on my tripod. It was a little unnerving balance-wise since I'm about 250. But he could spot moose and loons through the fog long before we could see them and get us close silently without bothering them.
I have no financial connection with Young's but I am honored that he did use a few of my photos on his website.
Edit to add: I think he has a freighter canoe that he can take entire families in.

Remember that until July the black flies and mosquitoes will be bad. Use permethrin on your clothing and I like the DEET wipes (Back Woods Off, etc.) - they are not greasy and can be easily carried in the camera bag or pocket. You do not want to spray DEET and risk it getting on your gear.

My wife and I searched for the Maine moose for 25 years before finally spying one. We have family in Maine and are there a lot. Still have not seen one with a rack. Maybe we're just unlucky.

Go to the Northwoods Outfitters. Much cheaper than hiring personal guide and you CAN do that also, there. Awesome folks.

Take a ride with the bush pilots for amazing aerials and physical thrills you will never forget. And watch for bears while you're on the ground. There is a classic big old hotel on an island in the lake.

Lily Bay State Park for camping. Can be crowded but there are some very nice areas for camping. I'm not one for just hanging around a campsite, so to me, it is just a place to pitch a tent for the night.
As for moose, believe it or not, the best place is the DPW depot in Greenville. There is a salt pile there that the moose love. Just above Moosehead, just past Kokadjo there are roads owned by a paper company. Can't recall which. There is good animal watching there. Go early, early or late. Make sure you use GPS. Easy to get lost on paper company roads. Also, watch out for logging vehicles traveling at high speeds later in the AM.
Moose can be tough to find in summer. They like higher elevations for the coolness and the fresher vegetation. they may not be easily seen. Guide can help but i know many that have been skunked even with a guide.

I'll second Northwoods Outfitters for general info. They also helped my wife and I find a great guide, very knowledgeable, affordable, and we saw several moose that day. That was quite a few years ago - if I can dig up the guide's info I'll pass it on. For something a bit different, get directions to the B52 crash site on Elephant Mountain.
