I like Steve's reply, but in situations where it is going to be very difficult to carry or secure my expensive equipment, I have purchased a high quality pocket point and shoot with a lot of zoom capability. I stick it in my pocket and never worry about security. It's quick and easy to use and with lots of megapixels and a good storage card, I can get photos with which I am highly satisfied. There are lots of these high quality point and shoots from which to choose that don't cost an arm and a leg. And if you use Amazon, you can get it in a few days.

Now let me say this first. If I am a good photographer I can find great subjects around the house but wouldn't you agree that photographic opportunity are most likely when you travel? If so why would you buy good cameras only to leave them at home?

I stay in hotels a couple of times a month. One time I walked past a room with the door open. The maid was going thru the guests personal belongings.
My wife stayed at a hotel and while she was eating breakfast $300 from her purse went missing. The security cameras showed an elderly woman carrying my wife purse so they know who stole it. She picked it up while my wife left it at her table and got some food.

I never leave my camera equipment or hand guns unattended at a hotel.

I frequently stay in hotels. When I leave my camera in the room I hang the Do Not Disturb sign. The hangers sometimes come off the door so I recommend closing the door on the bottom corner of the sign. Works especially well if your door is outside.

+1

It's also not a bad idea to leave the TV on as well, makes it sound like someone's home.

I have lived in the NY Metro area nearly all my life. I would really not worry about your equipment, either in your room or out. Don't be foolish, be alert and be sure your insurance covers whatever you have with you.

I’m going to NY this summer and I want to take my DSLR. Any suggestions about leaving the camera in the hotel when I don’t want to carry it?

A lot of hotels have in room safes, that's where mine stays when I am not using.

Call the motel, many have safes in the room. I use them all the time with no issue. I also have all of my equipment on a separate insurance policy with All State, the rate is very cheap for the amount of coverage.

I always carry the TSA locks when I travel. I lock all valuables in my suitcase.

I think the suggestion of using the hotel safe is the most secure. Its too bad that the world has progressed to it's present state, although maybe it has always been like this. I don't consider New York to be a safe place to go wandering around in anyway. Or maybe, being from the South I just don't trust northerners. (:

Agreed, if security is a concern lay it on the hotel and as stated you have an itemized receipt.

The camera never leaves my sight and goes everywhere I go. I didn't bring it to park it in a strange & possibly unsafe place. I can't get pictures if the camera is not in my hands. If not, then the cel phone is the ticket.

You could take your camera bag to the front desk and have them keep it in the “luggage room” while you’re out. They’ll give you a receipt and hold it safely for you.

Take your camera bag and put a little lock on it and check it in to the baggage claim area of the hotel and make sure your home insurance covers it

Agreed about safe. I don't think it's a North-South thing. I think it's an urban vs. suburban/rural thing.
I used to live in a small town in rural Maine, and there was virtually no crime. Was common for people to leave their house and car doors unlocked.

leave it in the safe with your own custom code number. All hotel should have a safe for guess, but I don't know how big will it be enough to put you DSLR. You may remove the lens from the camera for easier putting in the safe.

I normally use the room closet safe. However, I have found on a couple occasions, the safe not bolted to anything. Then, the hotel safe or carrying were the only options. Knock on wood...... I’ve never had an issue.
