Thanks Bob. My thought was for landscape and structures. It seems there are some quite small options.
I had a chance of purchasing a 16x20 view camera about 6 months ago.

I hear there are some good deals on 8x10 view cameras. Where does it end?
Pentax 645z medium format with 51.4MP has been around for a long time with a full set of lenses. Disadvantages include weight, cost, slowness of AF, and slower handling. The additional benefits of more pixels many times out weighs the ever so slightly more IQ. Consider there are “full frames” at 50 and 46MP out there (Canon 5DSR and Sony A7rIII.

I have a friend who shoots fashion photography (in a studio) who is using MF digital, and the results are spectacular. It’s not in my budget, but I still shoot MF film (RB67) and it’s actually no heavier than my 5D4, battery grip and a 70-200 f2.8 😟

However, Nikon did have a SORT OF medium format back in the day. Bronica used Nikon lenses and that camera created quite pleasing results.
Nikon made lenses for many formats. They made lenses for view cameras. They made lenses for the Bronica. They made lenses for the Plaubel Makina. However they never made a camera that is larger than 24x36mm. So I don't think they will make a medium format digital camera.

Bronica had a contract with Nikon to provide lenses, but Nikon had nothing to do with Bronica bodies, any more than present Nikon cameras are Sonys because they use Sony-developed sensors.
Nikon was a lens company before they made any cameras. They made lenses for all kind of things but the closet they came to making a medium format camera was when they decided to start making cameras. Their initial plan was to make a 6x6 TLR and a 35mm rangefinder. In the end they decided on only the 35mm rangefinder.

Any 35mm full frame users considering the step to medium format? Aside from the lens impact and DoF issue, do you believe the larger sensor, and possibly pixel size (depending on the 50 or 100 mp sensor) will provide better IQ for landscape. Fugi and Hasse seem to be leading here. Do you think the Nikon Z is positioning for a medium format sensor. Is it technically possible. Would the Z9 go there?
If or when I have time and space to setup my darkroom again I will drag out my medium format cameras and get back to photography. :-)
I have had the medium format cameras. Hasselblad, Mamiya, Pentax. They were great. Problem was size and weight for most people. Then, if you could afford the camera, could you afford the lenses? I see a niche, even in the digital world of today, for these behemoths. However, I am not going there. Forget the cost and the consequent divorce that would ensue. How large must you print before the inherent advantage of sensor size becomes a real factor? When was the last time you printed anything larger than 11x14 or 16x20? Does it really make your work look better. As a previous contributor wrote, he was quite pleased with his 12 megapixel camera. I have seen posters done at 7 and 10 megapixels that were tremendous. I want as many pixels as I can get and reasonably afford. 45.7 on the D850 is phenominal. I do mostly wildlife and sports these days. Action requires, oftentimes, handholding. Carrying around a huge camera and lenses is just not that appealing. My gear is already too heavy. I am not looking to increase the bulkritude of what I carry. Back in film days my Hasselblad was great. As a young guy I could not afford additional lenses. I ended up selling it to buy my Canon F1. I had many lenses for that. The divorce I had in those days had nothing to do with the money I was spending on camera and darkroom equipment; I swear.
So, if you are doing studio work or glamour or modeling work and can afford it, by all means, do it. If you are doing most other styles of photography, I suggest you think long and hard before dropping your hard earned dollars on something that may mostly sit on a shelf somewhere.

I am medium format with the X1D. It is much heavier than the Nikon Z-6 or Z-7 and lenses are appreciably more expensive. I believe (purely subjective) that there may be a slight improvement in IQ, but at what price. Besides, as I am loathe to print larger than 14"x17" it is certainly overkill.
That said, the
rumor mill is that Nikon is lookin at a Z-8 or Z-9 with 60 MP.
