I've come to the conclusion that the bag isn't going to matter much if you are carrying a lot of weight. It's still the same amount of weight no matter what bag it's in. And some of the top rated bags weigh too much to begin with which adds to the problem. Sounds like you have a good strap so really what's left to change? Less gear> lighter gear> prime lenses for hiking? An assistant? Hope you find the solution.

it certainly makes a difference how you carry the gear and what you take with you, an assistant would be grand but probably not going to happen. It's avoiding taking everything and figuring what is useful and what isn't. I intend packing this many different ways.

i think the 250 lowepro fastback is pretty capable although its 1.8kg about 3 to 4 pounds empty!

The big question is can i still use the sling at the same time as wearing the back pack? I should know in a couple of days. It has room for my 15" macbook pro and an iPad and it seems a fair compromise on size not too small but not so big as to kill myself with the load.

This little battle

was quite interesting they went for a roller case that had the lighting in it pretty much. It was more than they needed for some pro results.

The lowepro 250 has a very good suspension system so that most of the weight is carried on your hips and not your shoulders..

Hi
I'm thinking of getting a new bag, especially since i now have an 70-200 f2.8 which makes my camera with lens weigh about 5.5 pounds (2.5 kg).

I'm using something similar to a black rapid sport strap which is quite comfortable but my camera bag is not so comfortable and dragging round a tripod as well. It's a fairly hefty load and this is supposed to be fun not being left feeling like some beast of burden.

Last Saturday I was in a wildlife park and I probably carried my gear for around 7 miles within the park. often i'm on tracks or fields so maybe something with wheels isn't the best option. The other problem was the rather cool morning turned into a rather warm day so my jacket became something else to tote, and i probably should have been carrying sun screen.

Any suggestions for a bag / backpack / case to address the problem?
Hi br I'm thinking of getting a new bag, especiall... (show quote)

I'd look at current offerings from Domke, Tenba, LowePro, Thule, Peak Design, Think Tank... But I'd start with this one. It has a lot of fans, and it's affordable:

We are leaving on a trip to Machu Picchu and the Amazon Friday. I back my bag for travel with everything I think I will need. In this case three lenses, two bodies, filters, etc in the bottom and the top holds our sd backup system and items that we must have with us no matter what. When we get to the hotel and/or boat I unpack the backpack and pack only what I will need for the outing. Sometimes I only carry the camera one lens and a spare battery and sd card.

You didn't say what else you want to carry other than the tripod. Do you want to just protect the gear when you're hiking? Do you need to carry alternative glass? Is it for extensive travel? How about other stuff, laptop/tablet, gloves, jacket, water bottle, safe storage at home, etc.? Personally I'd use a messenger bag with a long enough strap to wear crossbody (under the peak design camera strap obviously) for easy access, reduced stress on the shoulder and security. Try looking at Think Tank, Domke, Lowepro, Tamrac, Peak Design, Manfratto, crumpler, or others. For the best price on a backpack - similar to the ones at amazon, look at wish.com for "camera bags" but be prepared to wait a month for it to ship.

Put your case on wheelers cart for the sand.

No. But I did recently purchase a Lowepro 13 x 32cm lens bag (for my Tamron 150-600mm) from a member "Hogger" and I find it to be an excellent bag. Just perfect for this large lens. ~FiddleMaker

A "Big Brown Truck" is supposed to deliver my new 'cannon' sometime on Thursday in two parts. I ordered it last Friday as a package deal from Adorama (filters, monopod, etc). I'm not sure I would have gotten it if I didn't apply for and get approved for an Adorama credit card. that way I can spread the payments out for a year if I need to. Hope you're enjoying your Tamron...please let me know if there are any issues that I need to know about. THX

I just purchased a Vanguard Alta Fly 55T for my trip to Iceland next year. I like how it is made!

It has great flexibility with the wheels (which do come in useful) and the straps. I used my old and big Tamrac rolling bag in the winter and just dragged it behind me up/down paths along the canal...photo class in town!

Add on to this question. I have good backpacks, sling bags, waist bags etc. I also have a bad back and an even worse neck. Carrying anything on my shoulders gives a lot of pain. I’ve moved to mirror less bodies and lens except for my EF lenses. I started researching a roller bag as a solution but most of the ones mentioned are not available including the lowepro and the Amazon basic. I’d love for it to be easy trail capable but.. any ideas would be welcome. Btw using a roller bag as a backpack is a no go with me as the frame adds on even more weight. I’ve thought of using a luggage roller bag with inserts.

I have a Tamrac roller bag that is so old now. I, too, can't carry much which is the reason for changing from a Canon 5DM4 to an OM-1 mirrorless. Still can't carry a backpack.

When I was in Iceland and a different time in Italy, I took my big rolling Tamrac! I have a photo of it in Iceland with grappel falling...the case worked fantastically! Here, during a snowy day, I just dragged it through the snow up/down hills. That old Tamrac has stood the test of time.

So perhaps a rolling bag will work for you? I am a Senior citizen with the usual aches. For me, this solution works best.

Anyone try the Lowepro 250 AW II Fastpack Backpack for Cameras?

No, but I have used the Lowepro 150 AW Fastpack for several years. Not a lot of room for camera and lenses, but the 250 is just too wide for my shoulders. Even the 250 would not hold that big 70-200 lens he's got. Now I use a Mindshift Backlight 26L bag. Lots of room and fits comfortably.

My approach in this situation is to simply place my camera bag into a standard hiking backpack, then carry it strapped on my back. I can line the inside of the backpack with towels or other materials if I feel a need for further cushioning. I don't really see a need to purchase a specialized photography gear backpack.

I see that you are from my ancestral home! I have been to Ireland a few times. Absolutely lovely. Each time was a hiking excursion where I carried a body and a few lenses. I have found that the Mindshift Rotation works well for me. I think it might fit the bill for you. Rather than me trying to describe the unique nature of this backpack please take a look at youtube.
