I liked the photos but what you do could be done much simpler: you need behind the bird to have a monochrome background. After that you replace the background with anything you like.
I have dozen of images and I could send you a few if you are interested.

Yes, that's a good alternative way to do it. In fact I few years I was doing it just that way. Here is an example done that way:

Excellent, First One Is A Cover Quality Shot. If You Haven't Done It Yet, Why Not Send A Couple To Perky Pet Hummingbird Supply's. They Have A Link On Their Hummingbird Page To Submit Pictures.
I'm Curious To Know What Camera Speed And Lens And Setting You Used? Looking Forward To Seeing More Of your Post.

My secrets are revealed on page one of this thread. To answer your question, 1/250 seconds, ISO=400, f/16. The lens used was an old Minolta 600mm f/4 with a Sony 1.4X TC attached to it. This lens is in a league of it's own.

The 'freeze' of the wings relates to the electronic flash (dominant light sources) duration--about 1/1000th second or so. 1/250 shutter would not freeze the wings as we see them. The wings would appear as a blur.

Here's 1/750th available light. Canon 600 mm pre-focused--and cropped from the full frame.

I started to set out my flashes and hope the hummers strike some interesting poses for me. A hummingbird was excitedly flying around me as I set out fresh nectar. I had time to turn on one flash then it started to rain. I brought my equipment back into the house. Maybe if it clears up I'll try again.

Amazing. It's like you set up a studio and wait for them to pose for you. You end up with jewels.

After the morning rain I set up my equipment. The first thing I did was improve the stability of the feeder. It's now fixed at a point and does not move. I patched a leak and took steps to prevent the ants from reaching the feeder.

I'm in the grove now. The hummers are coming and I'm taking their photos. I just brought my studio and five flashes back into the house. I left the feeder up and the hummers are still coming.

I have a lot of photos to process tonight.

My wife returned home from shopping and I told her that I have been taking hummer photos all day. She said, "No you have been doing it all week!"
