That is a tough one. I think I’d go with the one with the widest range and somewhere in the middle.

As for Zion, I was there last week, and you WILL want to get there early. I was at the visitor center before 8am and the parking lot was nearly full. When I got back to the car later, the lot was completely filled and people were circling like buzzards. But it was Saturday.

Will be going to Las Vegas beginning of June for 4-5 days. Not sure which lens to take. I have the following and only want to take one of them: EF 24-70mm f/4L; EF 16-35mm f/4L; EF 50mm f/1.8, EF 70-200mm f/2.8L II. I was in Vegas about 6 years ago but didn't get a chance to take any photo's as we were busy with a wedding. Want to take street photos and general photography. Will also be visiting Zion NP. During my visit to Zion, would I be able to use my EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L lens?

I would take the 16-35 or 24-70. You will need a wide angle lens more than a zoom lens, IMO.

I would take the 24-70 and the 50 prime. We were in Zion at the end of May a few years ago and saw no animals. The lens I used the most was the closest to your 24-70. The 50 will be great for night shots on the Strip. When in Vegas, take the Pink Jeep tour to Valley of Fire — it was one of the best tours we took and not in a big bus, a Jeep as the name implies.

I'm old school. When I was a journalist, many years ago, we had to shoot everything with a 50 mm. I still like it. If you want to get a close shot or far away shot you just moved the proper distance. I still keep my 50 mm 1.8 on the camera most of the time.

From your group of lenses I'd like the 24 - 70 as well for a walk around lens.

I spent a weekend in Vegas with a 24~70 f/2.8. That would be sufficient for any street photos you need. As for Zion and your question about being able to use a 100~400, sure you could use it. The bigger question is for what? Are you a wildlife photographer or are you going to shoot mostly landscapes?

Places you would want to photograph in Vegas are right there in front of you with in walking distance of one another. 24-70 might be your best bet, the lobbies of those those hotels are great places to photograph.

I covered Vegas, Hoover Dam, Zion & other NP with two lenses: Canon: f/2.8, 24 - 70mm II and f/2.8, 70 - 200mm II. I'd be happy to share my photos on Shutterfly. Send me a PM if interested.
Enjoy the trip,
Mark

I cannot talk about Zion because I have never been there but I have been to Vegas and your 24-70 should take care of the majority of your images.
When I visited Vegas a couple of years ago I took my Olympus with 12-40 f2.8 Pro and it was all I needed to get some beautiful shots.

To me it would depend on whether you have a crop frame body or a full frame body. I would use a wider lens with the crop frame than I would if I had a full frame.

Please don't take this personally, more a general comment to lots of UHHers but every time I see a question like "I am going here and what lens should I take?", then they proceed to list a half dozen lens I always sit at my desk shaking my head in wonderment. First, why would someone buy all those lens if they don't know when and where to use them? And second, the world is not basically different from the aspect that mountains in another country or state will have the same opportunity as mountains next to your house. Water is water, no matter where it is located, street photography is street photography world-wide. Sure, dependent on location, photos may be more amazing or bland, but the equipment doesn't change. Leaving for a river cruise in Russia next week and I am 99.9% sure what I need to take along. Why don't others? (barring a very young, brand new photographer who doesn't have any experience)
Please don't take this personally, more a general ... (show quote)

Las Vegas is a big city. Omaha is a big city. Why would you use a different lens in Las Vegas (or any other big city) than you would use in Omaha?

I would take as many lenses as you can. You'll find you will probably wish you did if you don't.

If you will have a car, you may drive out to Henderson and go to the Lindo Michoacan restaurant and go behind in the parking lot. Great view of the whole strip but you will need like a 200mm lens. There are several so make sure it's the one in Henderson.
