I once headed out on a day shoot to East Glacier in Glacier National Park. I live about 2 hours from there and this day everything lined up perfectly - lighting looked to be good, time of day, had my backpack with all my lenses, batteries, and other necessities. Got there early, pulled over, got out to take the first of what promised to be dozens of awesome shots and... no camera! I brought everything including the kitchen sink, but left my camera on my desk at home! Well, I always bring a little Pentax point-and-shoot with me just in case, and fortunately was able to use it to get a number of acceptable shots.

Been there, done that! About 20 yrs ago (prehistoric before camera phones), lived in Idaho and was never without a camera in the vehicle in the ready. The one (?) exception was a day drive from Idaho Falls to Jackson Hole on a road less travelled. We pulled off to the side of the gravel road next to a small pond. Glancing toward the water, we spotted the biggest moose we’ve ever seen, EVER. We all stared at each other for a minute or two, then the moose slowly strolled out of pond while our eyes were glued at this huge beast. “Where is the camera...?”

We wanted to travel to our powder coater in North Philly. This drive would take us 5 hours to get there. So we leave early in the morning around 5:30 am. Stoppe for breakfast etc.. taking our time, we arrive outside of Philly just as the sun is making it's way over the small town we drove through. I noticed historic home with an old rocking chair on the front porch.. I kicked myself for not taking my camera.. the sun and shadows playing off this element. Just one of those images ingrained in my memory hoping I'll travel back through that small town at the right time and this time have my camera.

Must be the "blurry effects" that we put in our store security camera.
I hear "do you recognize this criminal" on the TV a laugh.

Have you ever noticed that doorbell cameras and home security cameras have a nice, sharp picture where nothing much usually happens, while store security cameras where all the action happens have blurry, indistinct pictures?

I have a little Canon Elph 180 that is my constant companion. I started carrying it right after I came across Big Foot, Yeti and the Abominable Snowman in the woods all all laughing about some guy who forgot his camera. The Canon is cheap but is easy to carry and takes remarkably good photos. A cheap camera in your pocket is better than a $30,000 camera on the shelf at home.

I try always to carry a camera with me, at least the one in the cellphone. Yo never know what you can find.

I also like to take long walks on weekends, on which I carry my trusty Sony RX100M3 in a belt pouch.

Last Saturday I took one of my walks at dusk, and forgot to take the camera with me. I had a second opportunity 2 o 3 blocks from home, but for no reason I decided not to go back ad grab it... after all, I was about to complete the same circuit as ever, and there should not be anything new, right?

Wrong.

Big, BIG, mistake.

As I was 5 o 6 kilometers from home, I discovered an unexpected food-truck fest on the riverside with live music, classic cars and even two restored vintage firetrucks !

They started to light fireworks !!

And I didn't even carry a crappy cellphone !!

And worst of all, because of my schedule, I knew that I had no time to WALK home and DRIVE back to take any pictures.

So, I learned the hard way: always, ALWAYS carry a camera, or whatever thing capable of taking pictures.

Next time, I might just miss that one historical UFO landing with aliens willing to pose for the camera :-)

I think of the camera as insurance. If I have it with me life is calm and peaceful. If I leave it at home, volcanos erupt, buildings fall down and cruise ships sink.

My dad always kept his camera (TLR) on the backseat of our car (Nash) in the sixties, under a towel, as he didn't want to miss any unforeseen opportunity. He never locked the car, and in fact left the windows rolled down to avoid roasting the camera. Different era...

Good story and lesson for all to heed. Thanks for sharing. For years I've tried to always carry a Leica M, either film or digital, with the Leica 35mm f1.4 ASPH lens and it has resulted in many published images.

I think there are two good reasons to carry your cell phone at all times. Photos and safety.

I got a used ZS100 from B&H several months ago, and love it. It quickly became my "everyday carry" in a small belt pouch.

I was on temporary duty in Tokyo (5 days) from Vietnam in 1966. Left the Stars & Stripes building in Roppongi at dusk and there in the street were some kids with firecrackers. I had a Nikon F and a Canon 7 with a 21mm Lens. Chose the Canon because I knew which way the shutter curtain ran (left to right) and after two tries captured the exploding firecrackers. Handheld, about two seconds at F5.6. One of my best street photos ever. After that, I am never without an image maker.

You and I both chose the ZS100. I chose for two reasons, the price had dropped to $500 while the Sony had not yet introed their new model... second and more important to me, the reach... longer zoom. Both Sony and Panasonic and now also Canon cameras are excellent and fit in pouch or pocket easily; all take excellent photos and with post they challenge many DSLR.

My old saying is that "any camera is better than the best DSLR if the DSLR is at home on the closet shelf."

I do not believe in the supernatural except for "odd sock disappearance phenomenon," Phillips and Straight screwdrivers swapping availability opposite of need, and events happening when your camera is at home.

I have the ZS60 as my "purse" camera.
