I have been looking at a Nikon D7200 on Amazon. The advertisement states that the camera is an "import" model. The price is good and it comes with two lenses and other assorted goodies. I have seen articles here on UHH and others on the internet about avoiding these import cameras. However, I just found this document that says that as of 5/19/19 Amazon is a Nikon Dealer. Is there something here that I am missing? I know from experience that Amazon backs the products that they sell but I don't want to stumble uninformed into a bad deal if Nikon won't honor a warranty because I bought it from Amazon. Any help really appreciated. The list is in the download. Thanks, Paul

They are a Nikon Authorized Dealer, who happens to also sell Gray Market Nikon's. So, if you buy a Gray Market from them, you will not get it serviced by NikonUSA. You can get it serviced by the country of "IMPORT".

Is it being sold as a New or Used camera? I bought a used gray market Nikon and have had no problems. The price was good and if it ever goes bad I can have it serviced by a local service center. If the cost to repair is too high I'll just get another or new one.

If Amazon says it's a gray model, it's gray market and it won't matter that you bought it from Amazon. Gray is gray and Nikon will not warranty it. Simple as that.

The problem is that Nikon doesn't sell parts to independent service center.

Under the buttons that say "add to cart" and "buy now" it tells you who the seller is. I buy a lot from Amazon, but only when it says "Ships from and sold by Amazon". A lot of the D7200's being sold through the Amazon website are being sold by 'Liquid Deals'. Who????

Amazon is a Nikon Dealer. Many of the vendors are not.

You are spot on. However, sometimes it is really hard to see what the provenance of the merchandise is. Amazon has a huge problem with selling grey market and outright knock-off products, not just in the camera segment. I no longer buy camera stuff on Amazon. I either go to the local camera store or buy it at B&H.

No matter the brand, never buy "Grey Market" unless the equipment is disposable. The US importer won't fix it and won't sell parts to fix it, but you can return it to Japan. Don't hold your breath on that one! The chance of you ever seeing your equipment again are slim and none.

As usual, blanket statements are misleading: yes, Nikon says that they won't service "grey" Nikon products even if you are willing to pay, but that doesn't hold true with other brands. My experience is with Sony, and I've been pleasantly surprised with their policies: I have an A77 which I bought "grey" when it first came out. In the process of cleaning the mirror, I damaged it. When I contacted Sony, I explained the situation(grey market and my fault for the damage) and got a price quote for the repair. I sent it off to them and a week or so later received notification that the repair was complete and they would be returning my camera shortly. I inquired as to the cost, and was told that there would be no charge! I further inquired as to what had been done, and was informed that the mirror had been replaced and the camera had been checked for any other malfunctions! Needless to say I'm a happy Sony user! You need to be aware that the Nikon repair policy only applies to Nikon USA-anywhere else in the world will have different policies.

Paul,

Here is Nikons List of Authorized US Dealers as of 5/21/2019. Amazon is on the list.

If the camera you are looking at is being "Sold and Fullfilled" by Amazon, I would think it is a USA model, not an import. If it is being sold by someone else through Amazon, then it could very well be an Import model. Nikon USA will not honor, or even work and/or repair any import cameras or lenses.

That's a risky assumption. A retailer which is an authorized Nikon USA retailer can sell Nikon US warranted and "grey market" Nikon products side-by-side.

Henry, I am sure that you are 100% correct that an authorized dealer can sell both USA and "Grey" market cameras. But, when one reads what I said, I did not say ASSUME, or make that assumption myself. I said I would think that an authorized dealer in the USA would sell USA gear. There's a difference between thinking something and assuming something, we all know that, I hope. And I did include a link to Nikon's list of authorized dealers, who hopefully are like B&H, and are legitimate and reputable dealers that again, I HOPE would state on their website whether or not a product is USA or "Grey" market the way B&H and the other major reputable dealers do.

For the record, I have never bought a "Grey" market camera or lens, even though from what I have read both here and other places, are made in the same factory that USA equipment is made, If that's not true, I am sure that both myself and the other Hogs would like to have that cleared up if you are able to do that.

Thanks for your reply. Vince.

Grey market camera equipment is not counterfeit. it is the EXACT same equipment as the US-warranted version in every particular except the warranty coverage. These two lenses are indistinguishable from one another. https://bhpho.to/2VZuasZ

Thanks for the quick reply back Henry. As I said, B&H lists one model, MFR #5123B006 • BH #CA552504IS as "Imported", which means "Grey" market with a limited 1 year B&H warranty, and the other model, MFR #5123B006 • BH #CA552504IS is the USA model with limited 1 year warranty from the manufacturer.

Buyers have to be aware of what they are buying and what to look for when shopping. As for myself, I like to purchase my gear from dealers like B&H, among other reputable dealers who include that info in their product description. If the info I want before purchasing is not in plain sight, than I will call the dealer to find out, and if I don't get the answer I want, I don't buy that product from that dealer. But I have never to this point had any issues like that, because I prefer to purchase from dealers such as yourself and one or two others.

Again, thanks for your prompt reply back.
