I take the opposite point of view. If you want it, buy it. You can either keep or sell what you already have. "Making do" and regretting how you are living doesn't make sense to me.

I don't like his "...what you need" comment. Very few people need any camera at all. I've had cameras all my life - just for fun.

Throwing in my 2c. Canon cameras are made at the Oita facility in Japan. Nikon cameras are made in factory in Ayuthaya in Thailand. So much for tariffs from China.
I’m not sure why there seems to be a thought that life ends at 65. I figure I probably have a good 25 years to enjoy my new 5D Mark IV. All my relatives lived well into their nineties except for my grandmother who was hit by a pick up truck at 89.

Amen, brother, amen!

Maakten Heilbron has a newly posted video on YouTube: "STOP! Don't buy a new camera." Any UHH over 65 may find it interesting.

I'm just about to turn 75, and I've bought three new cameras in the last decade or so: a D300, a D810, and most recently a D850. Am I glad I did? You bet I am!

"I am 67 years old, but have always bought in the same manner.
I never buy a new thing just because it is new, or a fad thing just because it is a fad. I select tools which best suit the job I am doing. Because I select my tools well, they serve me well for a long time."

When I got serious about digital I put my Nikon F on the shelf and bought a Canon 5DC and over the years, several Canon lens (maybe a half dozen). You'd have thought I'd know better because I had one lens, an 85mm that I bought for shooting concert dance with my F that I used for everything. Now I mainly use a normal lens and a 28-135. Oh, and I never have seen the need to replace my 5D. Of course I'm only an amateur but one of my dance photos graced the cover of Dance Magazine back in the day (and I've sold hundreds of photos to dancers) so I guess that I'm not a totally incompetent amateur. And that 5D has never failed me. Who needs bells and whistles? Oh - and I'm 88 but I still ride a horse and take pictures at bird dog field trials or walk and take 'em at spaniel trials. I have FDSB English Pointers and AKC English Cocker Spaniels. I'm into dogs now not dancers. :-)

Stupid statement.

not a stupid statement, it is fact. Do the research for yourself or not, but don't call someone stupid because YOU don't understand the basics of economics.

No one likes tarriffs but at some point we have to deal with intellectual property theft. Three 2 term presidents failed all of us.

Philosophically I think the age is noted there because getting older seems to make GAS more apparent as just GAS, nothing more. I realize that the two cars I own should do for what I can reasonable expect of my lifespan. Ditto the cameras, lenses, firearms, tools, etc. So now I am left with a kind of sadness that "shopping" makes less and less sense. To me, AND I HASTEN TO ADD JUST ME, it's seems greedy. Not a rant, just an observation.

They say 75 is the new 65 so you can look forward to 3 more new cameras this decade before you turn 75 again!! I’m 65 and who knows how many new or gently used ones I’ll purchase before I turn my first age 75 and then become 65 again. Best of luck shooting until the end. Enjoy!!

I would rather pay a tariff any day when our Prez is trying to get a rogue nation from dumping their products on our shores, stealing our proprietary technology, and driving our wages lower versus paying more taxes because our politicians are over-spending and in bed with the large corporations. And, the odds of any of these tariffs going into place or being permanent are doubtful, only being tossed around by those not understanding the game being played. And, just FYI, my last two Nikon cameras came from Thailand!

Interesting observation but mine is the EXACT OPPOSITE. I find at 72 I look more for longer-term value versus just short-term gratification, but that only means I spend more money to get what I want because after a long career, I am now in it for me. (My 20-40-20 year rule - first 20 you live for your parents, the next 40 for your children and employer, the last 20 is now for ME!) So "shopping" - includes travel, dining, higher quality TV, computer, camera, etc - makes more and more sense to me now. And, I can't even imagine how the word "greedy" would ever enter my mind - I worked hard for almost 50 years, saved, paid my taxes, have never asked for a penny from anyone, so why would I not want to spend MY money on myself? To each their own, as long as they don't ask me to pay their bill.

I will soon be 89 and within the last two years I purchased a Canon 5D IV, a 70-200 mm f/2.8 L II, and a 50 mm f/1.4. If I decide that I need another lens or maybe a replacement for my G15 when it gives up the gohst, then I will replace it. Don't let age be a negative thing.

I am 68 (can't believe that . . . I read these posts from those 75 years old or so, and I don't even relate . . . my brain and body keep telling me that I belong to the mid-40's group, as I have been participating in fora such as this for a long time (I was approaching 40 when I got my first personal compuer)!!).

But I wanted to congratulate you that at almost 89, you are still accessing this forum on your computer, although I am not surprised that you still contemplate additional camera gear. GAS will be part of my epitaph. Good health and additional long life to you, my friend.

I just retired from a job that kept me busy 10-12 hrs per day, six day per week. I regret not spending more time with my family (although they would say that I spent plenty of quality time with them). Now, I feel free!! I have been visiting numerous physicians just to make certain that the "plugs" are firing, "carbs" free of performance robbing build-up. I tell all of the young docs that they need to help me make this machine run efficiently with full mental awareness another 40 years. After all, I have important responsibilities, not to a job, but to my growing tribe of grandchildren. Have to be around and in decent physical/mental health to be a good grandfather to them.

Part of that responsibility involves being able to steadily hold my trusty film SLR or DSLR with appropriate lens attached to record their development. Gotta do it, gonna do it. You do it, too!!

Where is the "smarts" in that statement? That is what I responded to. It appears you have no understanding of the "basics of economics" if that makes sense to you. As far as his disdain for the 1% he and you should look up how much Federal taxes and the percentage of the monies the hated 1-5% pay.
