Your Sony stuff will be all that you need -- until it isn't.

I shoot Nikons (and have since 1968) but have also during that time shot Leicas and, now, Fujis. I once strayed, thinking that the amazing Olympus OM system would replace everything else. Which it did -- until it didn't. That was an expensive detour.

Unless you're desperate for money and space, keep 'em both. After the newness of the Sony stuff wears off, you'll rediscover the Nikons and they'll reinvigorate you for awhile. Then you'll discover it's courses for horses: one system is good for certain things while the other is better for others. For years I carried an X-Pro1 with the 10-24 zoom, and a D7100 or D500 with the 18-300 zoom. The Fujis, like Leicas, are well adapted to wideangle stuff, while the Nikons are great for longer-lens work.

You've got a nice Nikon rig and you'll never recover your investment or what it would cost to replace it. Keep it, use it, be happy.

To all who engage in this form of brand comparisons, guess what? If you're a Nikon guy, Nikon is the only choice. If you're a Canon Guy, Canon (often spelled here as "Cannon") is the only choice. If you're a Sony guy, Sony is the only choice. And on and on into perpetuity for all the other brands. This is how it always goes... nowhere. >Alan

Sounds like a no brainer to me. Sell the Nikon equipment and buy a 55/1.8 lens and a 16-35/4 lens. I have that camera and just finished reading David Busch’s book on the camera and learned a lot about it!! I have 5 lenses for it, even though I only thought I needed 3!! They are the 55/1.8, 16-35/2.8 (more expensive than the f/4 but I really like it), a 70-200/4 that I bought used, and a manual focus Loxia 35/2. Oh yeah, I also have the 24-105/4 like you.

The Sony fans are gonna tell you to dump the Nikon and buy more Sony gear.

The tried-and-true Nikonians are gonna tell you to stick with the D7500.

I would give it a few more months and see if the "new" of the Sony wears off over time and you miss using the D7500 for some reason. You might discover some short-comings of the Sony over time... things that were doable with the Nikon APS-C DSLR, but aren't with the full frame mirrorless Sony. On the other hand, the Sony may be the perfect camera for you and your purposes. They're different tools... both very usable for many things... but different and each also excelling at other stuff.

I’m one of the”Sony fans” that advised her to sell her Nikon gear BECAUSE she said she uses it for everything! However, I also have a Nikon system, so my advice wasn’t because I also like my Sony but because the OP isn’t using the Nikon gear. In my case, my Nikon gear serves different purposes than my Sony gear.

Your advice to wait a few months before selling is sound and is, in fact, what she decided to do.

I am in agreement with others that if she is going to sell, she shouldn’t wait too long.

I disagree that this is a brand comparison. The OP simply asked, “what would you do?” and many piped up to say they had already done it (switched brands) and were not sorry.

i agree. If you read the thread, it wasn't brand fanism at all. She said she wasn't using the Nikon at all and asked what "we would do" as GrandmaG pointed out. In fact, I told her to sell the Nikon even though I sold my a7iii because "I wasn't using it at all."

I also have an a7III and it is an amazing camera, I'd say a hair better than my D800e... I'm keeping both because it's fun to switch... you do whatever your heart tells you to do and have fun!!!

I would sell the Nikon. I bought the D7100 when new and have enjoyed using it very much. I primarily use it for landscapes and birds with Tamron SP 150-600. I was looking for something light to carry in town and bought the Sony A6000 when it came out. I love that camera and use it with many of my manual lenses. Without a doubt I take better photos with the Sony. So I’m stuck with two systems and will upgrade to D500 and a Sony A7riii soon. There is so much about mirrorless cameras that just works better for my style of shooting. Have fun!

If you're like me, hang on to everything, even when your wife (or husband) asks you "do you really need a bike for every day of the week even though you only ride two of them?" And the answer is "Why yes dear of course I do." Even though as someone has pointed out they are losing value as they sit. Then there are the kids who ask if I'm going to get rid of some of this stuff before I die so they won't be stuck doing it.... I suppose I'm not one to give advice on this, I may need help. Should I sell some of my bikes, cameras, lenses, binos?

I keep everything also. Have 4 Nikons, all uniquely different with different uses, produced between 2005 and 2017 and use all of them, some much more than others.. I would definitely keep the D7500 instead of taking a beating on the used market. A brand new in the box USA model D7500 can be purchased for under $800. How much can you get for a used one even today without a warranty? IMO it’s worth more to keep and use periodically since it is a fine modern DSLR camera second only to the D500 in APS-C performance.

I was faced with this choice last year...now I don't own a single Nikon piece of equipment. Could not be more satisfied.

I went through the same process two years ago. Bought a Sony A7R2; stopped using the Nikon D810; after a year not picking up the D810, I sold the Nikon gear. The mirror was a pain to work around, and I greatly preferred the EVF.

I switched from Canon to Sony and never looked back. a7iiir is truly amazing. Of course, I only had a couple of Canon lenses (50, 70-100 or so as I recall) so it wasn't too painful. Got an a6000 first, then couldn't help myself and got the a7iiir. The nice thing about the a6000 is the pop-up flash, which I use to photograph my wife's calligraphy. I own a more powerful external flash for the big camera, but haven't actually needed to use it.
Given depreciation, sometimes it's not worth selling. I gave my Canon stuff to a (very appreciative favorite nephew).
