Since you are a hobbyist and you love Sony so much to me it is a no brainer. The D7500 ( although) an excellent camera, it will continuously lose value and when you are ready to sell you won't get very much. Take the plunge and commit to the sony system. It is a win-win for you.

Good Luck!

I am a hobbyist only...I purchased the Sony a7iii with a 24-105 lens a few months ago to use for travel.

I have been a Nikon shooter and love my D7500 and the great lenses (16-80, 50, and 70-300) I have with that system....

however, the Sony is just so amazing that I am shooting with it almost exclusively....(I take photos for my own pleasure, do not do anything professionally and am certainly just a fairly competent amateur)....

now I am thinking I should sell my Nikon equipment and use that money purchase another lens for the Sony....

Should I do it? Pull me back from the ledge if I will regret that move!!!!!

Sounds like you are afraid you will be making a mistake. If you are really engages with the Sony, and it seems like you are, move now on selling the gear before Nikon introduces replacements, as their value will drop even more. As a hobbyist myself, I consolidated a little while ago, and am completely happy with my decision in doing so. Good luck.

Your Sony stuff will be all that you need -- until it isn't.

I shoot Nikons (and have since 1968) but have also during that time shot Leicas and, now, Fujis. I once strayed, thinking that the amazing Olympus OM system would replace everything else. Which it did -- until it didn't. That was an expensive detour.

Unless you're desperate for money and space, keep 'em both. After the newness of the Sony stuff wears off, you'll rediscover the Nikons and they'll reinvigorate you for awhile. Then you'll discover it's courses for horses: one system is good for certain things while the other is better for others. For years I carried an X-Pro1 with the 10-24 zoom, and a D7100 or D500 with the 18-300 zoom. The Fujis, like Leicas, are well adapted to wideangle stuff, while the Nikons are great for longer-lens work.

You've got a nice Nikon rig and you'll never recover your investment or what it would cost to replace it. Keep it, use it, be happy.

I would keep the system that made me happiest. By happy, I mean it's easiest to use, gets the job done, is lightest, or most efficient, or...

Suitability is different for every one of us. Camera companies are all turning out excellent gear these days. It's so much better than nearly anything we had in the film days. So make your choice, and move on. Sony and Nikon both make great stuff. But there is NO perfect camera... just the one that is best for you and the things or situations you photograph. For me, that would be (is) something entirely different.

Only you can know what is best for you. Spend a day with each and photograph the same sorts of subjects with each. That should help. Rent more Sony lenses (lensrentals.com and borrowlenses.com are excellent sources) if needed, to help decide what you want.

One more thing:

Cameras are not investments... they are SUNK COSTS. Like cars, they are expense items and have some residual value on the used market. But their primary value is in their use.

Owning a camera just to own a camera is not a good idea! If you don't use it, lose it! I owned a very expensive guitar but realized I just wasn't playing it as much as my other ones. Yes, it felt good to say I owned it, but a beautiful instrument needs and deserves to be played. I sold it, and don't regret it, because now it is making the music it was built to make.

Sell the Nikon gear, and buy another lens. Think of it this way, Lynda. If let’s say a year or two from now you regret selling your Nikon gear you could probably buy a good used version of what you sold, for a cheaper price.

By and large camera gear is a depreciating asset. Unless you want to display your old camera gear on a shelf somewhere in your place, just sell it and be happy with your new Sony lens.

I was in a similar situation a little over a year ago, although in my case I had Canon equipment. You will not regret getting rid of your Nikon gear, and if you are a little patient, listing on all of the sale sites (ebay, etc.) instead of just one, will net you decent prices. The longer you hang on to your Nikon gear, the less it will be worth.

I have almost the same experience as you except I sold my Nikon d7100 and lenses when I bought my Sony a7iii. Yes it was a leap in faith but I was ready to go to full frame and mirrorless and wanted to commit to that format. Luckily I've gotten what I wanted and while I really liked my Nikon it did what I had wanted which was to get into the DSLR format. I have no regrets about letting my Nikon go because I'm very happy discovering what the Sony will do and my results seem to be as good as I hoped for. I agree with the others that your Nikon will only depreciate if you keep it now and sell it later.

Yes! There is no point in keeping a camera you won't use, and there are some terrific Sony (and other) lenses out there that you might like. Yes, you will probably lose money on what you sell, but you will get lots of use from whatever lenses you buy. Sony has some great wide angle lenses. I don't know much about their longer lenses, but I am sure others here can advise you.

I just now read that you decided to keep the Nikon. Think seriously about it. I have used dual systems in the past (Canon/Nikon) and now (Canon/Sony). I got the Sony a7rIII for travel and like its compact size and quite a few of the lenses available for it. I still tend to prefer my Canon equipment, but can't really let go of the Sony equipment either. They are so different from one another that it does screw me up sometimes, although I use them for completely different things.

If you believe all your needs are met by the Sony, it is a good direction to go in.

The Sony fans are gonna tell you to dump the Nikon and buy more Sony gear.

The tried-and-true Nikonians are gonna tell you to stick with the D7500.

I would give it a few more months and see if the "new" of the Sony wears off over time and you miss using the D7500 for some reason. You might discover some short-comings of the Sony over time... things that were doable with the Nikon APS-C DSLR, but aren't with the full frame mirrorless Sony. On the other hand, the Sony may be the perfect camera for you and your purposes. They're different tools... both very usable for many things... but different and each also excelling at other stuff.
