I recently posted about a wedding I was asked to photograph that, against my better judgment, I agreed to do; I shared concerns about several areas and have received many responses. Thank you for all of them. I appreciate your advice and insight. The day was very good and the photos were successful. I was able to connect with the wedding party and we had a great time in photographs, fellowship, and getting things done. However, I have decided to not venture into such murky waters again. And I thank all who contributed counsel about this situation.

Congratulations on your success. Have done 2 weddings in 30 years (both gratis for friends). Both couples divorced thru no fault of mine. Successful shoots but decided years ago to keep this a fun hobby (no more weddings!!

I quit doing them for those two reasons, and the overall stress, in the days of film. A poloroid preview shot would give me some confidence, but till I got my film from the lab, I was a nervous wreck (even though my film "keper" rate was very good, anxiety reined). Went into legal photography, was much more interesting, much less stressful, and more lucrative (for the effort involved) for me. My hat is off to any full time wedding photographer!!

What is legal photography? Sounds like it would be even more stressful.

I see two major criteria:
1) Success of the photos
2) Have an enjoyable experience

Sounds like πŸ‘πŸ‘ on both.
Congrats!

I shot weddings for a while. Upfront, I told them that I was there to document their marriages with high resolution images, not produce artwork. With the expectations tamped, I had no complaints.

Murky? It doesn't sound as if you had a pleasant experience.

From what I have heard of other people's experience if you are an amateur they don't even say thank you and you do have to have a thick skin.

"You are correct sir!" (Ed Mcmahon). You dodged the bullet this time, but your caution is most appropriate.
It's a tough game.

Glad to hear that everything worked out well. How about posting a few of the images.

Gotta admit, I was well trained, apprenticed for a couple of years, was a second shooter for another couple of years and took all the classes and was broken into the trade by some pretty savvy shooters but I did break quite the sweat on my first solo weddig job- over 55 years ago.

So...post a few images and tell the story of your experience.

I'd love to hear some good encouraging stories about folks new adventures in wedding land as opposed to all the negativity that usually accompanies posts about weddings.

I still shoot weddigs at 75 years old but I am gradually turing that aspect of the business over to the younger members of my crew. I still find the work challenging, creative, and I love working with people. The money's good too!

By the way- "Legal Photography" -someone asked about it- is also called evidence photography. Photographs are often submitted at trials as demonstrative evidence. In civil matter theses are photographs of property damage, documentation of personal injury, images of faulty stairways, roads, sidewalks that may have presented a hazard, intersections or roadways where an accident occured, photography showing encroachments and on property lines and those kinda things. In criminal cases there is forensic photography which documents crime scenes, ballistics analysis, surveillance of criminal activities, and some pretty gory stuff. This work is most carried out by specializing members of police forces or personnel from the medical examiners office. Weddings are more fun and upbeat!

I have been doing weddings for 50 years and never had a problem---except over money issues

Her comment was Dad this was not your best work. I said to her
I was in the wedding party. I gave you away on the beach. Really!!

I learned this lesson about letting anyone see anything other than my best work, be it photos, lab samples or competitive targets. A guy looking at a competitive level target of an olympic sport said "that doesn't look that great ..." without ever realizing the degree of difficulty involved.

As you can tell by the negative responses you always seem to get in the main section, I would invite you to join us in the wedding photography section, where we are positive and encouraging.

Nothing against those that don't want to do it, but they surely don't seem to respect those of us who love it. Once you get a few under your belt, it's addicting. Think about it, we are paid well to be a part of the best day of people's lives, and get magical photos that show the joy and emotion of that day. It's something I don't get to experience with just portrait work, you can't fake smiles or fake cry your way through a wedding. After shooting my first one solo in '86 I think, I still get choked up and caught up in the emotion and fun of the day, what's not to love?
