Hi Jim, thank you for your kind review of the pictures I had taken while riding the ARR. The engines that are used in transportation service for the cruise lines and the tourism industry are known as an SD-70Mac. And the ARR has more than 700 of these engines on it's roster. While I don't know for sure how many of them are used in passenger service, the bulk of them are used in heavy freight trains, Petroleum products, coal, lumber and other commodities. And they are rated at 4000 horse power.
I am a member of our local model RR club here in Sioux Falls, S, Dakota, the Sioux Valley Model Engineers Society, and I have 2 of these engines on my own roster, and they are exact down to scale duplicates of the real engines. But the hobby has become terribly expensive. I bought these engines in 2004, and I paid $134.00 for each one. Today you would spend a little more than twice that much, and the same manufacturer.
