I am a new member of the Ugly Hedge Hog, and this is my first attempt to post any of my work on this site. But first I will introduce myself. My name is Ray Loftesness II. I am of Norwegian descent, and I live in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. When my last name is translated from the old Norse dialect it means "land of the mountains". My Dad was a well known radio broadcaster and was best known by his radio listeners as "Lofty". I got into photography in the late 1970's, with the help of a gentleman who's name was John Stone. John was the director of Admissions for the University of Sioux Falls, and with his help I learned a lot of the skill that I have had for a long time. The bulk of my photographic work was done with a Nikon FE camera and a 50 mm lens. And I have 6 other lenses. All of my lenses and my camera bodies have been stored away, as I can not afford the cost of the processing of roll film anymore. And I don't like working with the little pocket-size digital camera that I now have very much. In September of 2003 I had gone on a tour of Alaska, along with 5 other members of my family. This tour included a ride on the Alaska Railroad between Anchorage and Fairbanks. I have always had a big interest in the subject of trains and railroading in general, and this goes all the way back to about 1962. And I am a 38 year member of our local model railroad club here in Sioux Falls, the Sioux Valley Model Engineers Society.
I have also done photographic work in Colorado's Rocky Mountains, Wyoming, and two of Canada's provinces, Alberta and Nova Scotia.

Welcome to the forum. Thanks for sharing your photos. #1 could be a poster in a railroad museum.

Thank you and welcome. You will have so much fun and learn so much in very shorty order...I promise.

Good luck and shoot more Trains . Try the Canadian Rockies train excursions if you are interested . They have gorgeous 7 day runs that are off the hook in beautiful scenery.

Hi Blair,
I don't know what it would cost me to ride Canada's VIA passenger trains from the East coast to Canada's west coast, but it is something I have dreamed of doing for a long time. The Canadian people were the first to construct a railway line that was really transcontinental. This was the Canadian Pacific Railway and they finished with it's construction in 1867. And Canada's Gordon Lightfoot talks about this project in one of his best known music pieces, "Railroad Trilogy".

Welcome Ray! I love trains. In 2017 my wife and I went to Denali on the train and plan on going back to Alaska we loved it that much. I took many train photos but found this one to be rather funny as I was focusing on the people taking photos as the train was approaching. It looks like the gent and his lady were focusing on me rather then what was coming. Oops. LOL

All aboard!
