Hmm. I lived there for a year. During the summer we got caught in a wind storm on an ash field and I lost on the paint on the edges, hinges etc. of the upwind side of my landrover as well as etching of the upwind windows.

I was referring to a short term summer rental. You are confusing personal experience, which is binary (it happens to you or it doesn't) with statistics. Like any insurance, you play the odds. If I was there for a year I would definitely get coverage. When I was there in the summer I had a good rental agent. He told me they love to sell S&A coverage in the summer since its basically free money to them; they rarely have an event they need to cover.

I've been there. It depends on what you like to capture in the way of an image.

#1 - 24 - 70
#2 - 70 - 200, if you have one.

The light is fantastic because of the sun angle that far north in the mornings and evenings. Be ready for weather changes.

Don't try to see it all in such a short trip. Plan ahead and be selective on the areas you visit.

As has been said, it is a real paradise for photography.

Thank you for the memories. I was stationed at NAS Keflavik in the early 70's. Lots of time spent in Reykavik and Keflavik. Climbed glaciers on Mt. Hekla, skiing in Akureyvi and outside of Selfoss. Went to Gulfoss and geysirs. The most incredible thing was an erupting volcano on Vestmanya (I.m sure the spelling is bad). It's an island off the southwest coast that was initially formed by a volcano. The new one erupted right next to it. They evacuated the island and asked the U.S. military for help saving the houses and factories on the island so I immediately volunteered. At the time I had a yashika tl electro 35mm camera and took all the pics I could. They put us up on the floor of a schoolhouse. One night 5 of us went out to see the volcano and got crazy enough to climb it while it was erupting. The only way we were able to was the incredible wind. As the volcano blew the lava into the night sky the wind would blow it away from us. We were able to crest the top and see down into it. Incredible to say the least. We retraced our steps and went to the south side where the lava, that was shooting into the air, was landing. Had to keep our eyes up because the rocks that were coming down hard and some were 2' across. We had shovels with and chopped some of the smaller ones open to the liquid lava and inserted sciscors and Icelandic kroner pieces into the molten part for souvenirs. Still have mine. This was the early 70's. Thanks again for the memories and sorry for the long winded story.

Spectacular place, visually and socially. If you are interested in puffins and whales, you may regret not having a long lens, particularly regarding the puffins. If they're not biggies on your list, lugging a long lens is otherwise probably not worth it. Enjoy the trip!

I am for a six day trip to Iceland. I am shooting with a Nikon 850 . I have a large assortment of lenses, but would like to travel light. Any recommendations for what lenses to bring?

I know lots of people are against wide range zooms, but I took 90% of my Iceland photos (posted here) with a Nikon 18-300 f3.5-5.6. Iceland is very windy and changing lenses really increases the chance of getting dust or moisture on the sensor.
