In 1976 I joined Digital Equipment Corporation (mini computer company). On a tour of the computer room, a consultant walked over to a cabinet that was about 3‘ x 3‘ x 6‘ tall. It contained four pull out bays with spinning storage disks. He said, “ each storage disk holds 2.5 MB of data, totaling 10 MBs. All of our system software and application software is housed on these disks. We also have quite a bit of space left over for data files. This 10 MB bank is all the storage you would EVER need.”

Guess they used jpegs then rather than RAW.

Haha. At that time they didn't even have the "J" in JPEG!
(I used an 11/44 a lot! With a 9-track tape drive, a paper tape reader/punch, dual 9" floppies, and two removable platters (with one fixed).

Why on earth would someone want to entrust so much data of any kind to a single little memory card, that is easily damaged or lost (and along with the camera it is in)?

Just because memory chip development is making such things possible does not mean that it makes sense. Same story with hard drive capacities.

That size memory card will be useful for video, which produces large files.
Us still shooters can be happy with our 32G or 64G cards.

Since my camera won't take anything over 16, I'm happy with my 8s and 16s.

For photography I wouldn’t use it, 32-62GB is good but for video I would

I don't trust all my photos on one. Sometimes trading out more than once a day using several cards on a trip.

Agree with you there. My largest card is 64GB. I use mostly 32GB cards. I'd rather switch out multiple cards then possibly risk losing all my images that were on one large card.

In another year or so you will be able to remove the ending zero from that price. Amazing how cheap storage has become over past 35-40 yrs.

In 1985-86 I bought a new 20 MB, yes Megabyte, hard drive for my XT Computer for $320 and got a steal. (Equivalent to over $700 in today's dollars). It DOUBLED my storage with the 20 Mb already in it!

My first IBM PC, not XT, had a 6 M hard drive with 128 k RAM

Who remembers the timex-Sinclair 1000 (jokingly referred to as “the doorstop”)? It boasted 3.2K. Extra 10K attachment about $40. You could attach up to four of them. This was the very early 70s. In the late 50s there were three ENIAC computers in United States. One was across the street from where I lived. It ran on 10,000 vacuum tubes. It required two full floors to provide air circulation to prevent overheating. When it turned on, the neighborhood power surge caused the TV picture to shrink momentarily. And you could not watch channel 2 (W CBS), because of the RF interference. That was a 10 K computer. Then came the transistor, and the world changed.

The Timex-Sinclair 1000 was my first computer ($300.00). It had the BASIC keywords built into the keyboard and was eminently programmable. I had a 16k memory module for it which, according to the marketing materials, meant I would never run out of memory! The Zilog 8080 CPU could outperform the IBM AT in math operations. I traded it up at KMarts for a TI-994A. Still have the TI, but I wish I had held onto to the Timex.

So true. I have eight cards. (Nine if I count the 4Gb "playing around" card.)

With some of the super mega pixel cameras coming out, they might be a good thing to have?
I don't see needing one in my near future.

will

It's a great idea but I don't see a lot of us photographers and videographers buying it now. Personally, I don't feel comfortable with all my work on ONE memory card. It's took risky! I think of an accidental format or a corrupted card can cause a grown photographer to cry.
Heaven forbid if you put it in your pocket and it gets damaged or worse yet. I have a rambunctious dog that wouldn't hesitate to make a memory card his brand new chew toy if I let him.
Nope! I not buying one!

Some of us used to guard floppy disks like they were children...

I would also bet that the MTBF for that drive was only 10,000-20,000 hours. Now, the MTBF for hard drives is easily in the 6 figures.

Storage size keeps increasing, and prices keep dropping. Still, 1 TB is an awful lot of storage for a camera.

I think my Lightroom library has a little to over 60k images and is a little over a terabyte...

Without checking, I'd be cautious that my camera can actually see a card that large. I've one camera in particular that seems very fussy regarding the size of card it will use. The others may have the same issue, but using the cards I have is quite sufficient. So, that's one I'll pass on.

Good point Bob.

I am just not a fan of SD cards either... small size might be easier for me to lose😎.
