Hi Tiffany and welcome to the UHH. I looked at your photos on Instagram and you have a good eye for composition. The IPhone takes some great images but is restricted if you want to do post processing and make better than 8 x 10 enlargements IMHO. I would get a camera that can shoot raw and jpg and learn how to post process using a photo editing program of your choice. I use Lightroom and Photoshop. You can also learn editing in the IPhone, but are limited with jpg images. Also use YouTube to help you grow in photography.

Welcome to the HOG. As you have seen there is a lot of info hear. Which camera to buy is a tough question. As you will see, both Canon and Nikon are outstanding products. You can't go wrong with either one. One thing to consider is there a local camera club available were you live. If there is consider joining it. The cost to join will be minimal and the people you meet there and the club sponsored outings will speed up your learning curve. You will find people there which you relate to and they will have equipment recommendations . Again the decision of a particular brand which is compatible with these fellow associates can help you decide. Good luck and remember this is suppose to be fun!!!

Welcome. I have been here for several years and I learned a lot. As some other members have suggested, go to a camera shop and try several brands. I have had Canon and Nikon dslr's and found the Nikon had easier to read menus. The Nikon d7xxx series are a little heavy but have a lot of features. My wife has a Nikon d5100 that I gave her a few years ago and she loves it and takes some great photos. Like shoes, go try some on and see what is comfortable.

I have the canon t7i, just recently bought it; before that I had a t31 rebel. It was good, the t71 is great. I did put three pictures out today from the new camera under a heading about a trip to Angel Fire. You can see pics from that camera there.

Tiffany. Since you are not tied down by a bunch of old legacy gear and didn’t cut your photographic teeth during the Korean war, you should be looking at Mirrorless cameras instead of DSLRs. That is the way the industry is going and where the future technical developments in interchangeable lens cameras will be.
The Sony A6000 would be a great choice for you and would allow you to grow with the best technology available now and into the foreseeable future.

Welcome Tiffany.

When I got serious about getting back into photography a few years back the Canon Rebel T4i is what I stepped up to from my Sony Cybershot H20 (which I still use in inclement weather since it's water resistant to 90'). I love it.
I don't think I've used any of the auto setting except macro once or twice. It was exceptionally easy to learn to use. I got it (body only) from a local camera shop for ~$300 (it was on sale 10-15% off regular price) but by the time I added ProMaster RF remote & strap it was just under or over $300. The fact that when I have some spare pocket change I can get professional lens that fit and work well with it.

Last year I picked up a Rebel T6 as a secondary body so I can have more than one lens mounted and ready to go. I have recently been forcing myself to use it more as it felt like a step backwards having gotten used to the articulating touch screen on the T4i. Had I gone back to the camera store for some hands on time I'd definitely have spent the extra $80 to get the T6i instead.

Both cameras are easy to use and capture great images. I highly recommend the Canon Rebel line.

The Canon Rebel series are great value and get you started into the Canon system which is huge and diverse.
Don't know what your budget is but the top Rebel the T7i is full featured and definitely good enough for superb professional level photos. It is not heavily built like "Pro" cameras that take lots of abuse like wide receivers in football running over the camera. So unless it is to be abused it will do excellent image making and the lenses available are second to none and better than many.
And whatever you get lens wise for the camera will be usable on higher APSC models and on all the RF mount full frame cameras.
