Our Nikkor 28-70 f2.8 never worked. We bought it new in 2004 and we shipped it back to Nikon four times.

By "not worked" I mean the auto-focus would jam. It jammed on all of our Nikons: D1X, D100, D300, D750. and F4. At the time we ran three D100s and it jammed on every one, every time.

Nikon would send it back to us as "repaired" and we would go into the field and it would jam within ten minutes.

The lens cost upwards of $1,500.00.

Nikon now says it can't fix the lens because they can't get replacement parts.

Yes, it is heavy. And now it won't even focus manually. It is a great paper weight.

What a buy!

I always wanted one of these, but money got in the way. It was the top of the line pro 2.8 zoom in its day, and every pro had one in his bag but me. I have the beast's little beastly brother, the 17-35 2.8, and I traveled for several weeks in Italy, shooting mostly street, and use it ona D3 almost exclusively. Was very pleased and still am, but as I age it gets heavier, I can see it's end.

I have the 28-70 and use it a lot. Bought it from National Camera. After a week it developed a focusing noise so I brought it back to National Camera. They had Nikon put in a new motor and didn't charge me one cent for the repair. Great company to do business with. When I'm just walking around I take a 24-85 3.5-4.5 vr. Works great on my D700 and D810. Its one of the cheapest used lens you can buy now, why, I don't know. I don't think the 24-120 takes any better picture, but it does expand farther, but also weighs more. 28-70 2.8 is worth having if the motor is good.

I am thinking about buying this lens and would like some feedback from the group. It is listed in good condition.

I currently have the 18-140 and 18-300 plus a 35 1.8 lens.

Would I see any improvement in IQ, especially in family settings during holiday and other events inside and out. It is my understanding that it is an fix lens and should improve my IQ.

And what is a good price for this lens

Thanks for any advice you can give on this lens.

I had tha Nikon 24-70 2.8 lens and it was a pretty good lens. The problem was that I do a lot of Infra Red photography and the 24-70 is notorious for having the dreaded hot spot problem with IR photography. I sold the 24-70 and I bought a 28-70 2.8 lens and I never looked back. The 28-70 is a stellar lens, well built and extremely sharp and it works fine for IR photography. The 28-70 is a heavy lens but it is worth the extra weight to have a great piece of glass. Only thing to watch out for is make really shure that the lens you buy is a U.S. version. If something should go wrong with the lens Nikon will not work on a gray market lens.
