The tripod foot of the Nikon 200-500 does not raise up enough from the lens (in my opinion) to allow it to be easily carried by that foot. The handle helps.

This is probably the highest and best use for the OEM tripod collar on the 200-500 because as for stabilizing the lens on a support, it is highly compromised - IMO !

I have been using it for two years to carry my 200-500 around Florida wetlands reserves. No issues so far. Does not seem to compromise anything, YET.

Yes, in Florida wetlands and National Preserves constantly moving is the best way to capture what wildlife is there. You must keep your equipment off tripods to maximize your chances of capturing the quick action that can occur at any moment.
Thanks for your post.

Bill I just ordered the Nikon 200-500 5.6 vr lens. I shoot mainly sports. How do you like the focus? Is it fast on a D500 or D4 in your opinion. I have a 80-400 4.5-5.6 vr now, looking for longer reach. Be here Friday.

The lens is faster to focus than my 300 2.8 and 200-400 f4, also, in my opinion, sharper than those two lenses. That's why I sold the other two lenses.
If handled correctly it produces beautiful images.
