Canon lens 85 mm, 1.2 Rubber on lens deterioration

Has anybody experienced the rubber deteriorate on the lens body. My lens is around 10 years old, in great condition, but the feel to the hand and the look of the lens is terrible. This is an expensive lens.....has Canon some responsibility of this condition.
The lens has been used sparingly, was not exposed to sun or any cleaning products. Something had to been done wrong in the manufacturing process and/or in the rubber composition. I expected this lens to last to the end of my life.
Any comments are welcome

This is a weakness of Canon lenses of the aged and design. I've had the same problem with less highend lenses. I can't merit any of the suggested actions at this post from 2010, but this is a known problem.

I've had similar problems on both the Tamron and Sigma 24-70-2.8 lenses. I bought new rubber for the Tamron for around $10 on Ebay and used a rubber from a broken Nikon 18-70 on the Sigma.

i know on cars , parts made in china with rubber as a part of them disintegrate within a very few years . if your problem is not fixable by cannon , can you wrap some electrical or ?? tape around .

I have never experienced anything with any of my Canon lenses, many more than 20 years of age!

I have a EF 24-70 2.8L which is about 2.5 years old and the zooming ring rubber has become VERY loose and has separated from the lens barrel, however, it is still black. The focusing ring rubber is still pristine. When I called the Canon repair center in Hampton, Va. they asked me to send it in so they could have a look see. The only thing they asked is if I leave the camera/lens in a car. Of course, the answer is no. Now all I have to do is to send it in for their inspection/recommendations. I will let UHH know what they say.

I have that same lens and the finish on it is a bit off, almost like a weak powder coat, but it does not sound like my lens is in as bad of shape as your might be. Which version do you have I or II?

Thanks to all of you for your replies. Based on the feedback my lens issue appears to be an isolated problem, and has happened infrequently. I will contact Canon and will asked for their advice and possible solution and will report back.

One more question: When you buy expensive lenses or binoculars do you expect them to last a life time if your treat them carefully or will they become throw away junk after 15 years. Just wondering.

I don't think that your lens is throw away junk, I do however understand your disappointment. What has occurred to your lens is unique to the finish on that particular lens, that finish is different than most other Canon lenses... It is very unfortunate that Canon used a product that would not hold up to coat that lens with, but I would imaging that your lens is still outstanding in just about every other respect. Like I said earlier, I have the mark I of that lens and it is special.

For those of you that have concerns regarding this subject, I thought that I might share the fix that I have accomplished on my Canon EF 24-70 2.8L lens after a simple google search which led me to eBay and Walmart of all places. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Zoom-Rubber-Ring-For-Canon-EF-24-70mm-F2-8-II-USM-Lens-Rubber-Replacement-/262134811046.
I used the Walmart link (https://www.walmart.com/ip/Canon-EF-24-70mm-f-2-8L-II-USM-Lens-Zoom-Ring-Rubber-Replacement-Part/615538363?comm-msg-vehicle=EMAIL&comm-msg-id=856fb7ce-47fe-48bc-81a7-414aaf91e88d) because of the close Walmart and their easy return possibilities just in case the replacement ribbed rubber grip did not fit properly. The replacement part fit nicely this morning. The rubber focus grip was an exact size and snug fit. As far as I can see it is a perfect replacement.
No, Walmart does not stock this item, like Amazon, this item order was filled by DHCamera (http://www.ebaystores.com/DHcameras) an Ebay store?
At any rate, Walmart took its cut, LOL.
