Interesting comparison. Insurance companies quote non-OEM parts to try to save a few bucks, not because they are equivalent.

My wife was hit from behind in her car a couple of years ago. Insurance required the dealer to install a 3rd party bumper. When it finally arrived after a longer wait than necessary, it would not fit. Mounting pads and holes were all in the wrong places. And yes, it was the "correct" bumper. After an additional wait of a couple of days for a genuine part, her car was finally repaired and back on the road. The insurance company ended up having to pay for both bumpers.

I got the vello, but I had some issues with it. The same issue that was fixed with firmware of the of the camera slowing/stopping shooting was happening with the vello, when I was using the battery in the grip. My firmware was up to date. I went to my camera store and was promised the promaster would be backed by them. I still did not pay the extra for the Nikon. So far, I have had no issues, but this has only been for a month or so.

If it's Nikon, use Nikon.

I have the Vello grip for my D850 with Wasabi battery and charger and have been very pleased with the combo. Also have the Vello grip for my D500. No problems with either grip; works just like they’re supposed to.

My first FF camera was a D600 and I mated it with a Vello grip. I experienced no issues with it, but then again; I did not use it as much as I thought I would.
Fast forward to my D800 and more recently the D850. I considered Vello again but bit the bullet and went with Nikon OEM grips. I looked at the cost and the complexity of the cameras and felt that Nikon grips were a better fit as Nikon had spent enormous R&D time and money optimizing them.
In full disclosure, I started shooting snowmobile races three winters ago on a frozen lake so a rapid frame rate, cold-weather hardening and extended battery life was essential. If anything would fail, it would under those circumstances.
If your needs are less demanding, I would give a qualified endorsement of the Vello. Personally, I would stay away from the lesser third-party knock-off brands.
Also if an electrical fault were to develop and fry your camera, you can bet that Nikon is going to disallow a warranty repair and blame the cheaper grip as the cause. Good luck trying to them to pay for the repairs.

Quality stays with the brand.

It's hit or miss with generic grips. I lucked out with mine on a D600 - I forget the brand - but some people get stung. You can buy several generics for the price of one Nikon, if that's any consolation.

After having a grip on the D600, I found that I really had no use for a grip. I'm glad I didn't buy the Nikon.

I love my Nikons, but some of their prices are ridiculous. Just bought the 500 PF...just sayin’
Only thing worse is how their repair dept. refuses to repair anything unless “you” take blame and pay for it yourself.

Why are you still buying Nikon's then. Over more than 20 years, the Nikon repair department has been more than good to me both in, and out of, warranty. I love my Nikon equipment too and Nikon has been good to me over many years. Best of luck.

I agree only buying Nikon accessories for Nikon cameras, your always taking a chance with a off brand. I have one question...why in the world would anyone want a grip for a D850?

Drastically improved handling. Better Portrait Mode controls & handling. Better handling when a long or heavy lens is attached. Second battery available.

Try one.
