How big was this bug?

Small. About the size of an Assassin Bug.

Good shots although I also do not know what species it is.

Lots of guesses. No definite ID yet. Thanks for looking, sippyjug.

Good series for ID. It is an assassin bug (as is the kissing bug - actually the name covers a number of species), family Reduviidae. Try https://bugguide.net/node/view/1551165. Bee Assassin? - Apiomerus crassipes. Another - https://bugguide.net/node/view/826511. Don't pick it up with your fingers - EXTREMELY painful bite! As with most reduviids. However, as far as I know, there is no endemic Chagas' in your area, and this (and most reduviids) isn't interested in your blood.

Hope I'm wrong but it sure looks like one. Bad news if it is because it was on my property. The last image is not very good but it's the only dorsal view I have.

This photo accompanied a Reuters story on Kissing Bugs. While concentrated in the states bordering Mexico, they're documented in at least 28 states comprising the southern half of the country. Texas A&M studies found that 50% of kissing bugs are infected with the Chagas parasite.

When I heard that they were attracted to your breath, I just stopped brushing my teeth but now every time I go out in public (wait for it) ….dogs urinate on my leg.
