Thank you all for the valuable information Decided to stay with the FX lens even though it is heavier than I like but I also carry a Lumix FZ-1000 which gives me a lighter camera. Appreciate the help
I repeatedly tell that a DX sensor sees 2/3 (1/1.5) of the image in both width and height that an FX sensor sees. So a DX lens on an FX body, if cropped by 1.5, uses 1/1.5/1.5 or 0.444 of the pixels. YES! Less than 1/2!
I own a 28-300mm and use it as a walkaround lens when I am not specifically out for a special reason. It isn't the highest IQ of my arsenal of Nikon glass but produced "good enough" results. I used it with my D800e and have been quite satisfied. I have not exercised it on my new D850 but the images I am getting on the D850 with my other lenses are noticeably better than the D800e with the same lenses. Soon I'll get time to exercise the 28-4300 with the D850.
I own the 28-300 and use it on my d800e. The combination has never disappointed me.
Thank you for your valued opinion I will try the 28-300 lens

As others have said, you are killing the capability
of your D850 with a Dx lens. The 28-300 is my
all around lens for Fx use.
If I anticipate "verrrry all around" needs, then
I really love the 28-300. But I'm more likely to
tote the 24-120. If indoors, almost definitely
the 24-120.
But if I could keep only one of them, I'd hafta
keep the 28-300 for its capabilities even tho it
makes for heavier combo that would likely go
fewer places less often :-(

My only advice is to put that lens on your camera before you buy it. It is a load and not a casual carry around lens. It is a very nice piece of equipment and will deliver, but, you need to know in advance about it's weight.
Do not use a DX lens on a full frame camera
