I am contemplating the purchase of a Nikon lens, but there are two chooses
AF-S 28-300mm F 3.5-5.6 G ED VR lens F mount FX format
Aperture F3.5-F22 Weight 1.8 lb or 800g
Second version
AF-S DX 18-300mm F 3.6-6.3G ED VR lens
F mount DX format
Aperture F 3.5-F22 Weight 500g
I am using a full frame camera and I like to find out from any one what is the DX format going to do to the picture size as well as the reach of the lens. Can the D 850 camera setting compensate.
Weight is a consideration. If you have any other suggestions it would be greatly appreciated
Thank you in advance

The Nikon DX lens will cause the camera to operate as a DX camera, creating images sized for a DX crop of 5,408 × 3,600px (19.4 MP). Most of Nikon's DX bodies are 24MP, so the loss of image resolution is significant, particularly your $$$$ investment in a full frame, high-resolution D850.

The DX lens will not cover the full frame capabilities of your camera. I have the 28~300 and have used it rather regularly over the past 4+ years. Some have negative comments about that particular lens, but many, including me, are quite satisfied with the results. I've done comparison tests using that, and other lenses, on several Nikon bodies. I cannot discern a difference in any of the test images.

Here's an example of that lens on a D800 body.

I have a similar situation, having an FX camera, with a DX zoom lens. Yes, the DX lens works on the FX camera (D750), but I already had the DX lens before I bought the FX camera. I would definitely get the FX zoom, and if you want wider angle, get Nikon's wonderful 20mm 1.8 prime.

I favor my Nikon D850 as my go-to-camera when I absolutely have to make a good image. I own and use many lenses but I would never put a DX lens on this camera. I don't own the 28-300 so I cannot comment on the resolution of the lens. I will probably never own it.

Don’t spend money on a DX lens with the intent to use it on an FX body.

As others have said, you are killing the capability of your D850 with a Dx lens. The 28-300 is my all around lens for Fx use.

Have both FX (including a D850) and DX bodies and lenses. It's a good idea to stay with FX lenses with an FX body. If you decide to go with a DX lens, you can put your D850 in DX mode and it will work fine acting as a 19mp DX camera. BTW, the D500 DX body is 21mp, so the D850 isn't a half bad DX camera. If you forget to put the D850 in DX mode you will see a dark to black circle around your FF image.

“so the D850 isn’t a half bad DX camera”.
Blasphemy!

As UHH members have already said, don't get the DX lens for your FX full frame camera. I'm waiting for the new Tamron 35-150mm f/2.8-4 lens. It's in the works and should be out soon. If it gets good reviews, I would like to get it for my D750.

The 28-300 is a mediocre lens at best, and on a D850 you will see all of it's flaws. Look on Nikon's list of recommended lenses and you won't see it on the list.

I would advise against getting mediocre glass for a D850. It has poor resolution at the long end. It would be a waste of money that you may regret down the road, unless you plan to use it on a DX camera.

Some swear by it, but the three copies I tested had me swearing, not by it, but at it. The lens performs best at shorter focal lengths, which leads me to the thought that you'd be far happier with a 24-120mm F4 FX - it's a faster lens, optically better, a lot lighter and pretty good along it's entire focal length range.

Many here that actually own the lens (self included) disagree. Of course a lens with 10x zoom isn’t as good as a prime on image quality. But the versitility of the range blows away primes and smaller range zooms. The image quality is good enough those of us that own it.

You might also consider the FX AF-P 70-300. Its image quality is outstanding. It comes in only VR. Don’t confuse it with the two DX versions.

Before you buy the 28-300, do a search on this forum. You will find much discussion from those who love it, to those who shun it.
I own one, and rarely use it.
