Teachers are low-paid because there are so many of them willing to work for the wages offered. (How many "education" majors are there floating around in the country?) If a currently-employed teacher decides to quit because the pay is too low, there will be 10 applicants to take the job at the same or lower pay. And paying them more won't make them any better teachers.

Most of the schools in the country have become nothing but indoctrination centers for the liberal left.

So, uh, we should just give our education tax dollars to for-profit, so-called charter schools, who will hire anybody who can stand upright to indoctrinate your kids into pseudo-science and revisionist history, while paying the school director mid-six figure salaries and senior managers of the charter school corporation millions?

There's a teacher shortage in the Midwest. Illinois will soon pay $40,000 a year to start. And the pension is incredible, a 3% annual raise compounded, protected by the state constitution. Ay-carumba. Oh, the comment about administrator, our larger school district (we have 2) used to have more administrators than teachers, not sure if it still does. But how many curriculum directors do they need?

You do realize that if they worked an entire year instead of 9 months they would earn more?

It may be "protected" by the state constitution, but if the money is gone it's just gone. One of my kids has inlaws who are retired IL teachers and they have been very worried for years about when the money will stop, as there is not NEARLY enough in the fund to pay all the obligations that the teacher retirement plan owes. It WILL run out unless there is a massive infusion of contributions, which there is no political will to impose.

Here in Florida our teachers are among the lowest paid compared to the rest of the country. Our money is used to pay for elegant architecture. We call them our "Taj Mahals".

That is the district problem not the Architects.
Architects are given a program and budget.
The school approves the design or rejects it.
It is 100% the fault of the school and the community if it is a Taj Mahal.
I have done many schools and know what the process is.

Hardly a subject that needs studying. Just hold up the camera and push the button!

Jerry I think we are talking the quality of the product AFTER you push the button. Anybody can push the button. But having people appreciate the photograph is a totally different subject indeed.

I agree 100%. We blame the politicians who want these grandiose structures for their personal gain.

We prefer to have better teachers, better grades and higher graduation rates.

Show how bad things have become. A person with a 4 years of collage can't get a job at some fast food place. But the Moron is saying everything is great.

Do architects have to take wasteful college courses like art history? The person who designed my house was a student of Louis Kahn and his ideas about light. My small house has 28 windows.

My daughters are teachers. You really don't think their school day ends when the bell rings, do you? There are lesson plans to do as well as papers to grade.

Perhaps, but at least useful knowledge you can use all of your life. Interpretive dance, not so sure. Imagine being married to an interpretive dance major...."dear - what was on the news tonight - NO! - just TELL me!"

Not sure the interpretive dance major would be flexible enough to go into the proper contortions to interpret the current news.

I known what your daughters are going through. Was a teacher back in the middle 1970s.
