I have the newest III and 2x I love it on my 100-400 sometimes it links up. Sometimes it does not. I also stack it with a promaster 2x it will register the canon in the data. Not the promaster. I get a reading of 800mm on the focal length but totally manual operation. And fun to work with.

Save your money. Even Canon does not really recommend using extenders with this lens. You lose auto focus in most situations and when it does operate its slow and hunts back and forth. Image quality suffers. Had a 1.4 Canon and finally sold it.

If want to TRY an extender, 1.4X will be the most practical for this lens. AF will be poor or non-existent, so figure manual focusing. If you want to save a bunch of money - I recommend the Tamron SP 1.4X .

The Canon website will indicate if the "III" is compatible with the 100-400mm lens. I use a Canon 1.4 II with good results. The focusing mode is MF mode as explained in the lens' manual.

Would the image quality suffer if the focus was correct?

Although It's on a different lens I use a Canon 1.4 III extender every day on my 300 f4 with what I feel are excellent results.
I need AF for fast subjects such as BIF so my best choice was the 300.
IQ is excellent with the extender and I have been very happy with it.

For many examples of wildlife photos virtually all taken with a 1.4 feel free to check out my blog which is updated daily.

The September 2012 issue of Outdoor Photographer has a very good article on Teleconverters that pretty much gives the straight scoop on them. It should be required reading before purchasing one.

In theory you will loose something - can you or I SEE the difference ?? - and even if we could - would it really matter ?
ALL my wildlife images are done with 1.4 or 2X extenders - see my sites on FineArtAmerica.com or MyParkPhotos.com under Larry Nieland for my images ..............

I have never had a problem seeing the quality difference with or without extenders. I think it depends on your personal standards and vision.
