When you apply at the post office the clerk can do the photo on the spot.

Not all post offices offer the service.

They aren't SUPPOSED to be bad, they just usually are. A good reason to shoot one yourself if you have reasonable photo skills. You can retake it as many times as possible to get one you like. Just pay close attention to the State Department requirements, and use their photo tool to size it correctly for printing.

Exactly! You can easily do it yourself and get the photo you want.

I have Aperture still on my computer and find using the crop facility and then when you are in the print window you can switch to metric if you need to and size the print as well as the headshot. I have produced British and US passport photos which have been accepted

What is the best program to use for getting the correct size for passport photos?

I just size them correctly in PS or some such. Then trim to exact measurement.

I went to photographer approved by the passport office. He did a great job and charged me $20. I got 4 copies. Much easier than being rejected.

If you are a AAA member and have one of their outlets in the area, just go there. Nominal charge for passport photos and of course they do it all the time so they know how to do it.

I did it myself 3 times. First time using a Nikon F5. This was a bit tough as I can't tell how much magnification the lab would make my print. I had it printed as 4x6 but they do crop it a bit so the magnification is a little more than 4.23 if a 35mm frame is printed as 4x6 with no crop. I had to have the lab printed a test print first to determine their particular magnification.
The second time I used a Nikon Coolpix 5000 which was a high end P&S and the third time was with the Nikon Df. Both I still have to have the lab printed a test print to determine the magnification but I didn't need to reshoot as I can simply resize the old shots.
If I were to print myself I don't have to do the test shot.

A note on Walgreens. When I tried to resize for a 2X2" photo I was redirected to the staff and the two photos cost something like $14. I took my SD card to Walmart and they were $.44 each. I'd be interested if this happened to others who went to Walgreens.

Hmmm. I've had no problem making ours. Just make sure the head is right size then crop manually.

But with PS, it can be trial and error to get the head size right. The State Department photo tool is much easier.

I never used a tool or template and I never had any trouble with them excepting mine for my passports!

iPhone app that works great. Print yourself or take to Walmart or other print kiosk.
